We were lucky to catch up with Davis Mallory recently and have shared our conversation below.
Davis, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
As a DJ we always get requests and one of the cool new modern trends I’m seeing in the industry is a way to do virtual Requests. Recently in Nashville I DJed a Corporate Event at the Four Seasons where we let the guests “play Dj” by scanning a QR code and sending in their requests to me virtually throughout the evening. It was a fun – socially distancing style way to put in a request to the DJ throughout the night
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Nashville based DJ + Singer-Songwriter, I trained to DJ at Dubspot School of Electronic Music in New York – and moved to Nashville to pursue creating music of my own – I tour internationally and within the US as a Corporate + Wedding + Private Events DJ. I am a former star of the MTV show The Real World + The Challenge.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I’ve taken a sales-type approach to my career – my first job out of college was in Sales – and I was required to make 100 calls or 100 emails every day. That technique truly has helped me build my reputation in the market as a DJ not only in Nashville but in areas I wanted to break into. I have reached out to many people in places I want to work – using this same methodology and it helped me build my reputation in locations such as Hawaii, California, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, New York and internationally (within Europe) primarily. The sales approach of expecting only 10% to buy (or in my case book me as a DJ) works when you reach out to as many as 100 people (decision-makers) in a market you want to build your name in.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I found lately that my best source of new clients has been diversifying my portfolio so to speak being on as many websites as possible (building profiles on companies such as Zola, Gigmasters, etc) and also having Agent representation for the markets I want to work (I’m represented by multiple agents in Nashville + and some in California, Florida, Hawaii) who send me repeat business.
