Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Williams . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
“POOK” Meaning Self Made Greatness. A name Given to me by Aunty at Birth way back in 97 ….Promoting positivity and bringing awareness that you are what this world needs. ”ROYAL” having the status of a king or queen due to the fact you are born into it. Understanding that this Power you possess is beautiful and to make great use of it. “POOK ROYAL” Ladies And Gentleman You are worthy of any and everything. We specialize in athleisure/ streetwear. We are known for the quality of our merchandise and how simple yet fly one can look while wearing it. Being intentional about colorways, stitching, fabrics, even the process in which the cotton was milled. Another subsidiary brand we are known for is Faithful n’ Black. It features our popular Faithful Black Men and Faithful Black Women catalogue. What sets us apart is the energy behind the brand. I want people to know that whatever it is they want in this world, they can make it happen. Thoughts are powerful. Intention and action is guaranteed success. Continue to be the best at what you do, all the while staying true to self.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always dreamt of having a brand of my own. Growing up around a lot of creatives fueled that dream. When the time presented itself I was ecstatic and ready to hit the ground running. I Have always been fascinated with the idea of my friends rocking something I made and actually liking it. I started out heat-pressing black and white tees in my dad’s living room with different designs I created on my phone. My dad helped set me up in the beginning; first set of t-shirts, vinyls for the heat press, etc. The shift was really just me jumping out on faith. I’d always envisioned having my own clothing line. So the biggest thing was just taking the confidence I had and making sure I was producing the very thing I would wear.
Things were very off and on in the beginning. Being a full-time student-athlete trying to balance a brand led to early inconsistency. Many people knew about the brand and wanted to support but I didn’t always have merch on-hand to keep wide-spread engagement.
POOK ROYAL as a brand promotes self-made greatness. Being the best version of yourself & actualizing your potential. We specialize in athleisure/ street wear for both men and women. It doesn’t stop with the clothing for us, community outreach and social justice are also pivotal to our brand. It’s bigger than clothes, we want to pour back into the communities that shaped us.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
For me the most effective strategy has been to be myself. Im a peoples person so interacting outside in a one on one or group setting works really well for me. The best feeling is when people ask me question about my brand because they took to the Time out and had genuine interest. Connecting with people in a genuine manner has been very successful for the brand.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I don’t have the biggest social media following but I have a very loyal and supportive group of followers that always show love. I built what I do have by family, friends, and networking with people. I built a presence by having a mission statement that people agree with and seek everyday. Network outside of your general friend group. You have to be willing to promote who you are and what your brand is in order for it to resonate with the people. Always remember your biggest fan will be someone you don’t know.
