We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
David, appreciate you joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
I couple years ago I really started to focus on the online marketing and advertisement of my music. From there I started to get brand ambassador opportunities. I seen that as a good opportunity to grow my social media. About a year later I checked my tunecore account and had no idea my music had been generating revenue. I was happy to see my work time and investment was paying off. Not to long after that I started to get payed for my reels on instagram. Thay came as a shock just because being a influencer was never on my mind. Not to long ago I lost my IG account to hackers, but I’m encourage that if u can do it once it can do it again.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Im a indie artist that has been making a name for myself with his unique style and sound. I’m from Chicago, some of my inspiration are Tupac, Busta Rhymes, T-Pain, Future, and Young Thug, creating a sound that is both melodic and traditional rap. Despite the challenges of being a indie artist I manage to stay motivated and inspired by everyday situations. I use social media and online platforms to promote his music and engage with his fans. I believe in staying true to mysldf and maintaining authenticity and individuality in my music.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
It’s so much that goes into being a creative. So much has to be sacrificed. Especially time and money. People tend to be more undertsing of the sacrifices dedication more traditional journey. Whether it be college, certificate courses or just trying to move up in the ladder at a company. As a creative sometimes people expect a quicker result or they will wonder why are you still pursuing it. I just want to say is a creative’s journey is unique and time table are for success is nonexistent.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Not to long ago I lost my phone with lyrics, and some songs I couldn’t recover. Not long after that, I lost my monetized instagram to hacker. I’m in the process of building back my instagram. I started a while new project form scratch seeing a lost alot of material from the last one. I’m almost done with my project and my instsgram is coming back stronger
