We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Walker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
David , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned the art of photography watching YouTube clips for a year and a half straight. If I would have gone to school for photography I believe that would have accelerated my education by learning from profesionals and they would have pointed out mistakes I made early. The skill that I feel that were most essential is the ability to talk to clients and they trust me with their time and ideas. My only obstacle that stands in my way is me. Nothing can stop me but me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into photography through a former relationship Christmas gift in the year 2016. That’s when I received my first ever camera the Nikon D80. I taught myself watching videos on YouTube for a year and six months straight. I have a handful of photographer friends and I use to shadow some on swimsuit shoots, sports, weddings etc. I use to shoot thousands of images night and day to learn about my craft. I have a mentor who use to ask me what do I specialize in and I said everything. Anything and everything that requires a camera I can shoot. Problem I come across are minor issues regarding my clients but when I do encounter a problem it can be fixed. The things that set me apart from is my ability to talk to the client and make them feel comfortable on ideas that we come up with and my ability to settle the clients during the shoot. One of my proudest moments happened when I shot a champagne party for a client and she was so overwhelmed with doubt about having to do everything by herself and I said everything is ok.. I’ll show you how I can make you see what you dreamed of and that’s what I did. I want my potential clients and fans to know is that I am a shooter that can shoot any and everything. Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on social media by shooting and hash tagging what I want to shoot. If you want to shoot sports. Find a school. Ask to shoot a team throughout the season. Hash tag the sport and post reels and stories through the say. Slowly but surely you’ll grow.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to work and shoot at my very best to be picked up by my favorites magazine’s.. Sports illustrated and National Geographic. Whatever it takes to live out my dream and work shooting for those participating companies is my drive.
