We recently connected with DAVID STEWART and have shared our conversation below.
DAVID, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
From my high school days till my early 20’s I played in a country southern rock band. Went to work in the construction industry then married and dropped the music career. Divorced and remarried and had two wonderful daughters. Divorced again and married a true music lover!! Was laid off in 2008. While unemployed I started to study songwriting. With encouragement from my wife, I started writing more songs. Playing open mics and kept writing. I ended up with enough songs to record my first CB, The Backwoods and have been writing and recording ever since. I would not change any of the past decisions because they got me where I am today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born in Houston, Texas and raised in the small town of Huffman, Texas. My parents were music lovers, so I grew up with music in the home. My mom played organ and piano in the Baptist church and my dad sang in the choir. Started taking guitar lessons in the 3rd grade and was in a band a year later. After graduating high school, I played in a band for a year. Went to work in the construction industry and worked my way up to a management job. Spent my career in the commercial Contruction industry and a sales, estimator and project manager. In 2008 I was laid off and decided to take up songwriting. I have released 3 albums and am working another.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am not trying to write hit songs so I can write what inspires me and do not have to answer to anyone (but my wife). My brain gets to go in different direction as the creative juices flow.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I started out with three songs that were worth playing to a crowd. I kept adding songs and playing open mics. One night a booking agent walked up after the show and ask me if I would like to play some of his clubs. After that I was playing around clubs and venues.
