We recently connected with David Ralston and have shared our conversation below.
David, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
So I use to work at a Franchise who went through all types of bosses. Than they got into a jam one day and they hired this guy named Dave who was not a pointer or a delegator nor was he hung up on ego he was a rare breed of person he was a type that just took action to get things done. INITIATIVE A very hard skill to find in people and one could go to school for years and still not acquire this skill. One thing I learned in life there are many lazy people but there will always be the ones that hear of a fire in the building and jump into action. To me I see this as common sense but it truly is not. He was the kind of guy whom told you up front I am not harsh on rules you do you swim as far as you want past the boundary but don’t get out there and expect me to save you all the time. Once or twice sure but you will ruin our relationship by you getting to frequent in relying on me to bail you out. Much respect for this guy. Be a man and live up to your choices.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a local massage therapist and work just above old town Scottsdale,AZ. I have been a Bodyworker since starting school in 1997. I instruct people all the time about daily life principles, stretching, and inform them about the knowledge that not all chiropractic or massage is the same. I reckon I am kinda like an old school Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid movie, very low key not a bling bling type seeking all the attention. I am very skilled yet pretty humble you may see that in a reflection of my prices and my time which has been quite generous for some throughout the yrs. I may have 11 subscribers on my YouTube page. I have a rare form of passion for my working on bodies and enjoy mixing it up with tools that I utilize. Perhaps some think tool work is all about pain but quite honestly there are many times I never even use a tool. Many want to define you by techniques and understand you and your style but for me I do a blend of many things in a creative sometimes humor filled massage. In my time of visiting many therapists I have never found anyone that does what I do. I work with all types of people not just popular athletes or movie stars. I would think after 20 plus yrs of doing this work as a man which is rare in the field of bodywork I have a few things to offer. Pay me a visit DavidLMT.Rocks
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Many years back I asked a chiropractor would you ever do massage work? He’s smiling going no you spend to much time with a person and you get limited money in return. I could see multiple people in an hour while you seen just one. I looked at his work and he was seeing people for 3 -5 minutes than shout down the hall Next. That is when I started to smile thinking why don’t people see through this and realize it’s so much more to your problems than just pushing on a bone. He was money driven I was driven by truly wanting to help people. Now don’t misunderstand me he was helpful in what he did but he was only willing to give you so much of his time before your out and the next one is coming in. At this point in my career I wish I had the drive for multiple offices and hunger for driving more and more people through the door. However I am a solo operator with a few skills that a few people each day can experience. So I think it is more of the way I seen the field and my desire to help people which requires more of my time. Yes I would still pursue the field of choice.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Early in my field and still today I have to be real with myself and realize people don’t always mean what they say. Many don’t know how to say NO. These people will go wow that was the best massage I ever got I will truly see you next week. Words are coming out but the action taken is totally different from what they really intend to do. I have been told multiple promises dude Im going to send you 12 people from my gym or I would surely follow you if you change locations and realized just because people say it does not mean they will come through on their words. So the reality is take the words people say with a grain of salt, their actions are what really mean something. Why sure I would love to write a review for you. Poof delete never see them again. If I had a quarter for everyone that said best massage ever…….. When your young you come in with a great belief that people truly mean what they say over time and experiences you see it differently. AKA Everyones story will be different does not mean all people don’t come through.
