We were lucky to catch up with DAVID RAGIN recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi DAVID, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was younger, I got bullied a lot at school. The only thing that made me feel better were cartoons and TV. Especially Kel Mitchell on Kenan & Kel. He always made me laugh and made me forget about my day. The way he made me feel. That’s how I wanted to make other people feel.
Throughout middle and high school, my favorite thing was superheroes. To the point where I made my own superhero: a teleporter called Graffiti. As soon as I graduated high school, I bought a camera off my sister’s then-boyfriend and with my friend, fellow actor and creative Cortez Andre, we started working on our first film, Graffiti: Dreams & Knightmares, which would release in 2013.
Ever since then, we’ve done more Graffiti films and made our own comedy series called Cyberstars. Everything we’ve done can be found on our YouTube pages.
DAVID, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I officially established by company, Cyberstars Entertainment, on May 30, 2020 and revised all former and active media products under the new brand. Since then, I’ve been actively working on both Cyberstars: The Series and the Graffiti franchise, as well as outsourcing myself and my talents for other projects. I’ve appeared in many locally filmed projects, and was even hired to edit and appear in my first ever film from a third party, called “Love Amongst Friends” in early 2022.
I’m currently writing more episodes of Cyberstars, as well as continuing to write more on the overall Graffiti story for a yet-to-be-revealed media. I have also been brought on as an actor, creative consultant, and editor for multiple upcoming projects, as well as have many projects awaiting release. Next year is going to be extremely exciting, and I have no intentions on slowing down anytime soon.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
When I first started looking for ways to expand my reach and work with other actors and creatives, I unfortunately relied on my local friend group and word-of-mouth to do so. If I had learned how to properly utilize social media and connect with my fellow actors and starving artists, I honestly feel that I would be further along in my journey.
To anybody looking to go into this line of work, it is very important to establish connections with fellow actors, directors and creatives, and use your various forms of social media to stay linked and tuned in to the wider world of local entertainment. You never know who is connected to what and where each path can lead you.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
It’s an unspoken secret in life that “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. That cannot be more true when it comes to the entertainment industry and the journey of a starving artist or aspiring creative. While I don’t have the biggest social media following possible, I try my hardest to link and connect to my fellow actors and directors every single time I leave a set. It becomes a “help me help you” situation. I follow you and you follow me. When I post an audition or casting call, you’re the first to know because we’re connected. When I have a project coming out, you have the chance to share and support if you want.
It may not be the fastest way to build an audience, no; however, in my personal opinion, it definitely feels the most genuine.
