Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David R3y . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Ever since I can remember I always knew I wanted to do something with the arts but I never knew exactly what I wanted to do.
I remember very well that my mind was always flying away with many crazy ideas, creative thoughts, but at that time I did not understand them and I didn’t have anyone to guide me in that world.
I come from a place where making a living from art was difficult, the future as an artist was not very promising. While my friends wanted to be lawyers, doctors, etc., deep inside me I only wanted to be artist.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a Visual Artist from Guatemala, I moved to the US about 17 years ago looking for a better life. I live in Maryland and I work in the construction field as a Caulker.
I discovered the wonderful world of art on a trip to an art museum in Philadelphia, it was love at first sight! All my life I always thought that if I was going to do some art it would be music and although I always had a guitar with me I never felt the way I feel when I’m painting. I think painting choose me. I never knew clearly that painting would be something I would do. I really like anything that is about creating something from nothing and being able to turn an abstract idea into a painting is something difficult to describe and to put into words.
I don’t like labels, I always try to avoid them. In this way, I feel free to flow in different areas of the creation part. I like to mix elements, experiment with all the materials, mix different forms of expression. In my paintings I like to incorporate symbolism, numerology, religion, philosophy, astronomy, economics, technology, emotions and feelings. Some of my paintings reflect the joy in the face of another person or the sadness in the eyes of others.
When I paint I like to go by what I feel at the moment. I always start with an idea and let that idea speak to me. Each painting is a blank world where I can experiment mixing media such as oil paints, acrylics, spray paints, markers, chalk, charcoal, cannabis and vegetable oils, coffee, cement and more. Each one of them behave in a different way and allows me to manipulate them in different ways to get what I’m looking for in my paintings. In the same way, I like to experiment with different forms of painting, such as abstractism, expressionism, surrealism and others such as digital painting and painting on photographs, each of these forms allows me to better express an idea.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is the opportunity to bring an abstract idea to the material world and that idea creates a feeling in the person who sees it and although the painting has a specific message, everyone interprets it in a different way, there’s nothing better than that!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Ever since I was little I always thought and felt that coming to this life only to work and make money doesn’t make sense to me. I believe that we come with a purpose in life, we all carry a GPS within us which tells us where to go and leads us through life, giving us a clue as to where we are going. My mission in this life is to paint the experiences, lessons, emotions and feelings in this journey that we all call life. My goal is to leave a positive mark on the world.
