We were lucky to catch up with David R Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
David, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My Dad gave me two things, my work ethic and my compassion for people. He was a small attorney and he was willing to meet people in the Evenings or Saturday Mornings because that way his clients didn’t have to miss any work. He was also willing to work with people regarding paying him because he felt everyone deserved to be represented, even if they couldn’t afford to pay him. At my Dad’s Funeral, it was delayed for hours due to all the people that showed up to pay their respects to my Dad. People would share stories with me on how my Dad made a difference in their lives and often lowered their bill because of their inability to pay the full amount due. To this day I remember that and it was served me well with working with my clients. Being flexible on meeting times that work best for them and always trying to figure out a way to help them, even if it means referring them to someone else that has a better solution than I have. My agents often ask when I do that, how do I get paid and I say, I don’t. They then ask why I would do that and I say, because it is the right thing to do.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the Lending Business right out of college. It was in 1981 and interest rates were in the 16-17% range. The company I was working for at the time, was doing Wrap Loans, blending new money with the existing lower interest rate on the property and being able to finance the property at below market interest rates. Then interest rates dropped to 11.5% and they started doing first mortgages. I have always been one of the Top Producing Loan Officer at each of the companies I worked for. I became a Branch Manager because I was always helping other Loan Officers put deals together. I was a MacGyver of sort in the Lending World, being able to put deals together that other Loan Officers couldn’t figure out how to do. I then became a Regional Manager and eventual was the EVP of a Regional Mortgage Company in Plano, Texas. I was in Management for 18 years and traveling all the time. I then decided to go back to my first love and that was originating Mortgage Loans. I love building relationship with Real Estate Agents and helping Buyers realizing their Dream of Home Ownership.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think my Integrity and Building Trust is what has helped build my reputation the most. People want to do business with people they know, like and trust and I believe the best way you do that is taking time to really get to know the client before trying to do business with them. Taking a genuine interest is someone by getting to know who they are and what’s important to them is the first step in building that relationship. From there, communicating honestly and offering solution that work best for them. Sometimes it is not what the client wants to hear but if you are honest and offer other solutions, I find the client will respect you and continue working with you. You only have your reputation and I will never do anything that would have someone question my integrity.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my Social Media Audience by offering a daily post that was either inspirational, motivational or positive. My goal on Social Media is to make a Difference In The World, one post and one person at a time. I have been doing that everyday for many years and I am known for that. People often tell me how my post have helped them in some way and say how much they look forward to them everyday. I have a number of different Social Media Platforms, my Personal Facebook Page for inspiration, motivation and positivity. My Facebook Business Page for anything having to do with Home Financing, Helpful Home Ideas, Travel or Helpful Personal Tips. My Facebook Speaking Page and LinkedIn Page is having anything to do with Leadership, Growth or Self-Improvement. My Instagram Page for Inspiration, Motivation, Positivity and Homes For Heroes.
I have begun doing some Business Posts on my Personal Pages as it relates to Homes For Heroes, helping Firefighters, Law Enforcement, Military, Healthcare Workers/EMS and Teachers with their Home Financing or helping my Trade Organization, SMDRA, promote their events.
For me, Social Media is all about bringing value and not so much how many followers or likes I get. The Key is Consistency by posting Something of Value Every Day.
