Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Quintero. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
About 7 years ago in 2016 I was fired as a manager from Pasco Kitchen and lounge by Ramiro Scavo(the owner). I had worked a year for him at his restaurant and quickly became manager and was responsible for all the day to day reports and shift managing. I was promised a raise and never got it. Then one day I asked him for the money i was owed and he fired me 2 days later. I filed a wrongful termination grievance with the department of labor and unemployement and we were heard before an arbitrator and I won against him. It was because of this situation that I decided I would not work for another employer thats going to underpay, underappreate, and over work me and instead I took the risk to start dienamikVISUALS and was funded by the unemployement claim i had won against Ramiro Scavo. This monumental moment and risk changed my life forever and ensured that I have a means to provide for myself and my family for life through my business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I had always been behind a camera for the purposes of my involvement in music. I released 8 albums under the name Dienamik and a rap/metal album under the name Mopar Bentley. I filmed all of our shows and most of our music videos. After my separation from Pasco i decided to take the risk and spend $3000 on a camera with gear that i did not know how to operate. I decided that I was going to use the camera to provide for myself and my family. I was lucky enough to be mentored by a big name here in town for Photography, Cayupe. She was willing to take me under her wing and teach me while paying me. I absorbed everything i could and took as much direction and guidance as possible. I ended up working with other videographers as well that i also learned from like Bryan McAdams, Tony Baril, Jacob Desio, and others. I provide ads, highlights, cinematic documentary style, cinematic preview, commercials, and more. Ive filmed various projects including ads for a charter school, massage instruction, aerial drone shots, restaurant and business ads and product photography, and more.
Im proud to be one of tucsons most consistent live music photographers having photographed over 25 touring artists.. The experience not only speaks for itself but has been featured by these major artists on their social media platforms and for promotion.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
After I had bought my first professional camera, I put an ad up on craiglist for $25 photoshoots for me to practice, learn, and build my portfolio. It was my eventual partner Cayupe from Cayupe Eclipsi Photography that contacted me and asked to interview me. We met and spoke about my knowledge with photography. It was none. But I spoke of my drive. I told her that Ill do whatever it takes to learn and take direction and instruction. She agreed. And now Cayupe Eclipsi Photography in partnership with dienamikVISUALS has worked with over 75 clients together and counting.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I find that while editing some of the videos i work on, sometimes the clips, the audio, the video, they just somehow end up in the right order by accident. I do purposely edit them, but when im placing the clips in and add some audio or a tender moment shared from the video clip, upon placing it into the timeline, at that exact moment the background audio changes, or the clip aligned with the heartfelt message given by narration that was recorded separately. It strangely just comes together almost as if i deliberately did it even though it just happened by chance. Sometimes when Im filming I get an idea to do the shot differently and dont even think about it till days later when im editing and it just reappears and I realize what I had done. And finally one of the most rewarding parts of this business is seeing the clients reaction to the video I edited for them. I dont remember the last time a client didnt cry after seeing the video I had edited for them.
