We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Perez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
David, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
Scaling up New Design Cabinet Factory wasn’t an overnight process. It started with a simple goal — to build high-quality, custom cabinetry that truly reflected craftsmanship and precision. My father started the shop years ago, and I grew up watching the process. Over time, I wanted to modernize the business, improve our systems, and bring in technology to increase efficiency while maintaining our craftsmanship.
The biggest shift came when we began investing in advanced equipment like CNC machines and precision tools, and when I started expanding our team. I focused on hiring people who cared about quality as much as I do — cabinetmakers, finishers, programmers, and installers who take pride in their work.
From there, I built strong relationships with local contractors and designers, which helped us get larger, higher-end projects across the Central Coast. We went from small residential jobs to full custom kitchens, offices, and commercial cabinetry projects. Every project taught us something new about organization, timing, and teamwork.
Scaling up has been about more than growth — it’s about building a reputation for reliability, craftsmanship, and integrity. Every cabinet that leaves our shop represents our story and our commitment to doing things the right way.

David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is David Perez, and I’m the 20-year-old owner of New Design Cabinet Factory Inc., a custom cabinetry company based on California’s Central Coast. We specialize in designing, fabricating, and finishing high-end cabinetry for residential and commercial projects — from luxury kitchens and vanities to offices and full custom interiors.
I grew up in the trade, learning the craft directly from my father, who started the company years ago. Over time, I became deeply passionate about not only woodworking but also the process of running and growing a business. After high school, I made the decision to take New Design Cabinet Factory to the next level — investing in CNC technology, precision software, and modern production systems to bring together traditional craftsmanship and innovation.
What sets us apart is our commitment to detail, efficiency, and design. Every project we take on is built with precision and pride, with the goal of exceeding client expectations and creating cabinetry that will last for generations.
Even though we’re still in a stage of growth, I’m proud of how far we’ve come — building a dedicated team, taking on larger projects, and developing strong relationships with contractors and designers throughout the Central Coast.
Outside of work, I enjoy running and playing golf — both of which help me stay focused, disciplined, and creative. My goal is to continue expanding New Design Cabinet Factory into one of California’s leading cabinetry companies, known for quality, innovation, and craftsmanship at every level.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One story that really represents my resilience comes from when I first started taking over the day-to-day operations of New Design Cabinet Factory. I was only a teenager at the time, learning how to manage jobs, employees, and clients while still figuring out the business side of things. Most of the contractors and clients I dealt with were much older and had years of experience, so earning their trust and respect didn’t come easily.
There were days when projects would go off track — a deadline would tighten, a material shipment would arrive late, or a machine would break down — and I’d be the one expected to solve it. Instead of backing down, I used those moments to learn faster. I stayed late, studied processes, and started refining how we organized production, scheduled installs, and communicated with clients. Those early challenges taught me how to stay calm under pressure and keep the team moving forward no matter what.
Looking back, those situations helped me develop the discipline and problem-solving mindset that I rely on today. Running a cabinetry company at 20 hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve learned that resilience comes from adapting quickly, staying positive, and never letting setbacks define the outcome.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been building trust through quality work and consistent communication. In the cabinetry industry, reputation is everything — most of our new projects come from referrals or repeat clients who were impressed with the craftsmanship, organization, and attention to detail we bring to every job.
I focus on making the process as smooth as possible for contractors, designers, and homeowners — from clear estimates and 3D renderings to precise fabrication and on-time installation. When clients see that we deliver exactly what we promise, they naturally recommend us to others. That word-of-mouth network has been our biggest growth driver.
Social media has also played a key role, especially Instagram. By sharing behind-the-scenes videos, design concepts, and finished projects, I’ve been able to connect directly with designers, builders, and clients who appreciate high-end, custom cabinetry. It’s a simple but powerful way to showcase our craftsmanship and build credibility beyond just our local market.
At the end of the day, growth for me comes down to two things — doing excellent work and treating every project like it’s the one that defines our reputation.
