We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Parks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
I think if I could go back in time to the beginning of my career in film, I would have focused more attention on the art of storytelling.
The technical side of filmmaking has always come very easily to me so I feel like for quite a few years that was a crutch. I’ve been a part of making films for over 10 years, but I was 40 years old when I wrote and directed my first script: Static Codes.
Since then, I have written and directed pretty steadily and it’s been incredibly artistically fulfilling.

David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m probably best known as a cinematographer. I’ve lensed somewhere around 80 films at this point in my career. Most notably: The Amityville films that were released on Lionsgate: Amityville Harvest, Moon, and Rising.
I started because of a house party when I first moved to LA. I went there for the free food and they needed someone to load a 16mm film camera. I was the clapper/loader on that small project and I’ve been doing camera work ever since.
RAD CINE is a full-service cinematography company. We have cameras, trucks, lights, offices in Hollywood.
Villainous Films is the production company where we mainly focus on developing action and horror.
I love working with indie filmmakers. I’ve been fortunate enough to work on larger projects/sets but I’ve always gravitated back to the Indies. I find that’s where I can be the most creative.
I’m most proud of the the films we have coming up:
– A director’s cut of Static Codes
– Apocalyptic action thriller: Blackout which I Co-Directed with LeeAnne Bauer
– And the horror documentary: A Love of the Dark

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Hard work. There was 5-8 years at the very start where I was honing my craft and I was filming 24/7. The joke about me is; What does David do on his day off? He shoots another movie.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth and repeat clientele. Once I work with someone, I tend to be asked back for multiple projects. I try to go all in. I’m very aware that sometimes, we make people’s dreams come true in Hollywood. I try my best to make that happen.
