Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Oku. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David, appreciate you joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am content with my current status as an artist; I have an agent and a consistent flow of work, so I have no reason to complain. The only times I miss having a traditional job are when I long for the stability of fixed working hours. While being self-employed offers tremendous freedom, it can also tempt you to push your limits and overwork at any time of the day.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hey there, I’m David Oku, a versatile creative based in London. I wear multiple hats in the world of art and design, which include being an illustrator, animator, fine artist, and occasional graphic designer. My creative journey is a reflection of my diverse background that spans continents and cultures. Born in Germany to a Nigerian-Italian heritage, my art is a blend of these rich influences that have shaped me.
My journey as a graphic designer began back in high school when my professor recognised my potential and hired me for a graphic design position in his new company while I was still in school in Milan, Italy. Those early experiences fuelled my passion for the craft. After years of doing graphic design jobs, I made the move to London, where I completed my studies with a bachelor degree at the London College of Communication. Since graduating, I’ve worked as a part-time sales associate while continually taking on creative projects that came my way.
One opportunity led to another, and satisfied clients brought in more clients. That’s how it all started, I guess. It’s the hard work, dedication, and countless hours I’ve poured into my work that have allowed me to transition into a successful freelancer today. Today, I’m recognized for my dynamic digital illustrations and animations that burst with color and energy. I carefully select hues to infuse life into each piece, and what sets my work apart is the undeniable positive vibe that radiates from it.
Today, I am proud of myself for pushing through and chasing my dream. I never give up, and I feel so blessed to have worked for some big names in the industry—something I could not even envision as a kid.
My art isn’t just a way to express myself; it’s an open invitation to see the world through a lens of optimism and vibrancy. With every new project, I continue to captivate audiences from around the world. My multicultural background isn’t just a footnote in my journey—it’s the driving force behind my creativity. Drawing from my diverse experiences, I believe in the boundless power of creative expression.
As I add new pieces to my portfolio, I invite you to join me on a journey through my art that transcends boundaries, celebrates various cultures, and leaves behind a trail of joy. I intertwine stories, colours, and emotions to create a narrative that showcases the beauty of unity in diversity. Connect with me, and let’s embark on this artistic adventure together.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
“The loss of my parents, losing my father before I even turned 18 and then, on the day of my graduation, realising my mother wouldn’t be there to witness it, were two profoundly challenging experiences that tested my resilience to the core. They broke me in ways that words can hardly capture.
However, these heart-wrenching events also became the crucible in which my resilience was forged. Their absence forced me to dig deep within myself, find strength I never knew I had, and embrace the mission to become the best version of myself.
In the face of adversity, I channeled my grief and pain into hard work and dedication. My commitment to leaving a lasting legacy in honour of my parents became the driving force behind every endeavour. Their teachings and the love they bestowed upon me are the foundation upon which my resilience is built. I will forever be grateful for the lessons they imparted.
Life is a journey filled with obstacles and hardships, but it’s also a journey that offers us opportunities to rise above and make a difference. Resilience, to me, means facing the toughest challenges head-on, refusing to be defeated, and emerging stronger and more determined.
I believe that my parents, even in their absence, continue to guide and inspire me. Their memory fuels my determination to create a better future, not only for myself but for all those who encounter my work. Their legacy lives on through the resilience I’ve cultivated, a resilience that empowers me to transform adversity into strength.
In essence, my story is a testament to the boundless power of resilience. It’s a reminder that even in the face of life’s most heart-wrenching trials, we can find the strength within ourselves to endure, thrive, and honour the ones we’ve lost.”
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
“I believe that the driving force behind my journey is a simple yet powerful goal: to inspire the newer generation. I want to show them that every dream can become a reality with sacrifices, hard work, dedication, and unwavering consistency. It’s crucial not to be swayed by those who doubt you; only you truly understand your limits.
Many people didn’t believe in me when I shared my childhood dream of becoming an artist. I grew up in the 80s when art wasn’t commonly seen as a viable profession. Regardless of how many tried to steer me in different directions, I always held art close to my heart. Now, I’m reaping the rewards of that decision.
Therefore, I consider it my mission to prove that every dream can indeed become a reality.”
