Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Nasulme. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I truly knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally was back in 2008/2009 when I recorded and released my first mixtape on DATPIFF.COM. I was 19 years old attending Georgia Gwinnett College after a failed attempt at a basketball career in South Carolina & music was the only thing that was giving me a sense of purpose. Music has always been a part of my life even before basketball but when things didn’t work out all it gave music the opportunity to take the forefront. During that year there was a big emergence of independent artist, and I was listening to them all. I remember falling in love with the fact that these artists were doing all this without any major label and almost completely by themselves. I watched endless interviews and vlogs on how they recorded in basements and in hotels using twitter to connect with other creatives. That right there motivated me to put this hidden talent that I had to use. It was almost instantly I started bumping into other creatives and finding my way into studios and before I knew it, I had an entire mixtape recorded and a cover for the mixtape a close friend of mine had made for me. I remember creating an account on all these now major hip hop sites for free and uploading my mixtape. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to share that talent that I had been hiding with everyone. I couldn’t believe that I was able to have complete control over something that I loved and enjoyed unlike basketball. It was then when I released my first mixtape when I knew that this was something I wanted to pursue professionally.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is David Nasulme Jr. & I’m known by my alias Waviano Ronaldo, I’m 32 years old and serve in the United States Army. Music became a major part of my life my freshman year of college after I recorded my first mixtape. I now write, produce, mix and record music for myself as well as others and if anyone is in need of any of those services, you can go to WAVSFORDAYZ.COM. and contact me directly. You can also go to WAVSFORDAYZ.COM to stay up to date with my latest releases, beats and apparel as well as my new podcast.
I love being able to create freely and having control over music career. What I’m most proud of is having this brand that i can call my own that is a representation of me.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson that I had to unlearn was “The Blueprint to Success.” For the longest I believed that there were rules, guidelines, and procedures to follow in order to be successful in music. I found out over the years that there aren’t any rules and there is no blueprint only tools that you use to create and build your success as you see fit. With that I was able to define what success really is.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Being independent is amazing. However, being independent is extremely costly. Everything is completely funded out of my own pocket. In 2017 I became a father and putting money into music was no longer an option. In order to provide for my daughter, as well as myself I made the decision to join the Army. Today I can say it was one of the best decisions I could have made.
