Alright, David thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Starting a business is never easy, but it can be incredibly daunting when you’ve spent years with a secure income. For me, starting Modern Beard Co. was a big step that required a lot of courage and determination. The backstory to my decision to start this business goes back to my frustration with the lack of quality all-natural grooming products for men on the market. I realized there was a gap in the market, and I wanted to create products that would address the needs of modern men.
I spent months researching the market, sourcing the best ingredients, and developing the perfect formulations. I invested my savings into creating a website and marketing my products. There were moments of doubt and uncertainty, but I knew that this was something I had to do.
The risk paid off. My business started gaining traction, and I got positive feedback from my customers. Today, my business is thriving, and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished in such a short time. Taking the risk to start my own business was a life-changing experience that taught me a lot about myself and what I’m capable of.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Modern Beard Co. is a veteran-owned business that produces premium grooming products made with 100% all-natural ingredients. Our handmade beard oils, balms, and butters are crafted using organic, cold-pressed carrier oils and the highest quality essential oils. Our products are chemical-free and formulated to nourish all types of facial hair. We believe in giving back to our community, which is why a portion of all sales is donated to a highly rated organization that assists veterans. By choosing Modern Beard Co., you not only get high-quality grooming products but also support a business that prioritizes giving back to those who have served our country.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
At our business, we’ve found that we gain the majority of our new customers through in-person vendor events. These events provide a unique opportunity for us to connect with potential customers and educate them about our products in a way that’s difficult to do through online sales alone. Educating new customers is key to gaining their trust and loyalty, and it’s hard to achieve that through digital channels alone. At vendor events, we’re able to showcase our products, explain their benefits, and answer any questions that potential customers may have. This face-to-face interaction allows us to build relationships with our customers and establish a level of trust that’s crucial in gaining new business. While online sales are important, we’ve found that in-person vendor events are an essential part of our customer acquisition strategy. A big portion of our online revenue has come from repeat customers that we’ve had the opportunity to meet at these events.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
As an entrepreneur, I took the leap and started my business with my own money. I was passionate about my vision and was determined to make it a reality. With careful planning and a disciplined approach to finances, I was able to launch my business without outside investment.
I started by conducting extensive research to understand the market and identify my target customers. I then developed a detailed business plan that outlined my goals, financial projections, and marketing strategy. With a solid plan in place, I invested my own savings into the business and began building my brand and promoting my products.
Starting a business with my own money was challenging, but it gave me complete control over my finances and allowed me to pursue my vision without outside interference. It also instilled a sense of pride and ownership in my business that I wouldn’t have felt if I had relied on external funding. Today, my business is thriving, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have started it with my own resources.
