Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Moreno. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I taught myself how to play the drums by just picking up sticks and hitting away at furniture to make beats until I got myself a drum kit. I played in bands and during that time I picked up guitar, bass, harmonica, piano and anything I could get my hands on. Eventually when I went to college I got a laptop and started making songs by myself and I fell in love with the craft of songwriting.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi my name is David Moreno and I like to make music with my friends. I’ve been interested in music ever since I was a little toddler banging away on pots and pans and making noise all throughout our home in the San Fernando Valley. In the last 20 years I’ve grown a lot but one thing remains the same. Everyday I play an instrument, make percussive noise or sing. My main life goal would be to teach everyone how to express themselves musically as it’s one of the many forces that has helped me survive. I first got into the industry when I was playing drums for different local bands in high school and right before I started college. During that time I began learning to write my own songs in an experimental therapy group that paired a group of struggling teenagers with two therapists who would meet once a week to talk about music and how it helped us cope with life and then we would write lyrics or quotes from different artists and hang them on the walls. At the end of the program we got to meet a mystery celebrity guest who turned out to be Dave Grohl and he took us to his studio to record our very first songs. After that I started writing my own songs and recording them on my own. Eventually I started my own band with my sister and the thing I’m most proud of is the short impact I’ve already had on my small community. Not only did I meet an amazing person and drummer through Liam, but he ended up being a fan and supporter of my old band who came to my old shows when I was just a drummer. I guess the obvious thing I should say is meeting Dave Grohl is the thing I’m most proud of, but forming my band post-pandemic has meant just as much to me as that. For me, writing is the only way I truly can express myself. So anyone who enjoys the music I make is appreciated beyond words because I really don’t have any motives or intentions other than just making music with my friends and hopefully inspiring someone to do the same.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Two of the biggest things I wish I knew when I started was, to not box yourself in and learn to work with different people. Don’t just stick with what’s familiar. I feel like I spent a lot of years just trying to be a drummer when I turned out to be a multi-instrumentalist and artist. I spent a lot of years boxing myself into one category instead of exploring multiple possibilities. And it was the same with people, I would stick to the same group of people until I turned 23. When I turned 23 I moved out and met new people and started making new friends and collaborating with people in different fields and genres than me. Doing all that led me to finding my own voice and I think that’s the most powerful journey an artist can have.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I turned 23 not everything was rose and peaches. I slowly began to pivot in a new direction than the one I was going in previously. I still wanted my old band and old life but I knew If I was going to better myself I needed to pivot in a new direction. Starting a new band and being the frontman and leader was something I had never done before and I was afraid to do it. But something in me just told me, we’ve never done this before and that’s exactly why we need to do this. It was a scary choice and some of my old bandmates were bitter towards me for going in this new direction but I knew I had to pivot because the other direction wasn’t heading anywhere and I was tired of just waiting for my life to change.
