We were lucky to catch up with David Meadows recently and have shared our conversation below.
David, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Well, it wasn’t a straight line process that’s for sure! When I first decided I wanted to be an Actor, which is a whole separate story, I knew, just as I do with everything, that I wanted to be the best I could possibly be. As such, I started to research my favorite Actors and Actresses, the folks I simply loved to watch and I felt truly exemplified the craft, and I looked into how they got to where they were. What was their path? Almost every single one of them had a Classical Acting background–Theater and Drama School. So that Is what I set out to do. I started by Taking Acting lessons at “The Actor’s Place” in Virginia Beach and working locally in Theater and TV. Soon after I met a brilliant mentor who helped me to take the next steps in my journey by moving to NYC, for the first time, and Training professionally at “The Michael Howard Conservatory”. There I got my first real dose of full-on Actor training with Voice, movement, Clown, and all the other tricks of the trade. This also changed my perception of the real “life” of an Actor. I was now working and training with students who had decided that this was their life–they were serious about their Art and Careers and weren’t just treating it as a hobby. After graduation, I continued to work in Regional Theater as well as jumping into more TV and Film roles. A year or so later I got an unbelievable opportunity to go back to NYC and Train at “The Studio of New York” Conservatory learning under some of the top Drama teachers in the world. The time I spent at “The Studio” catapulted my work and growth as an Artist to new Levels. It changed my views on everything I thought I had learned about the Craft of Acting and of living as an Artist. A couple of Years later I was afforded another brilliant opportunity to move to Europe and perform and Train in the Classics as Part of “The Prague Shakespeare Company”. I could write an entire book on how much my time there changed my life…but that is a story for another time. Several years back I moved out to Los Angeles to begin working full-time in TV and Film as well as open my own production company aimed at empowering Military Veteran Creators in the Arts.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As an Actor, I am most drawn to telling complex stories of flawed heroes or Heroic villains. Iago, from Shakespeare’s Masterpiece “Othello”, Stands as my favorite example of these types of characters. Brutal, charming, and infinitely complex and wounded. As a Producer I focus on telling imaginative, fun, stories in unique ways. Our first TV Pilot, “REPOd” is an Action Comedy trope that makes fun of Action Comedies while being an Action Comedy. We pull out all the stops. It is done in a similar vein as “Deadpool” or “A-Team” and takes the Audience on a wild ride of laughs and action from the INSIDE. You’ll just have to watch it and see what I mean….. We also empower other Veteran Film Makers on their Creative Journey by lending our network and skillsets to them as mentors or co-creators, allowing them to push their own creative endeavors forward while learning to navigate the often murky Entertainment world of Hollywood.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I am a big fan. I have been heavily invested in the crypto space for several years now and the introduction of NFTs is an exciting new venture for Artists. In fact, my production company and emerging film projects all incorporate them. For a long period of time, Artists of all different disciplines have had to suffer through having their work controlled and marginalized by various “middleman” entities. These various organizations and individuals acted as “gatekeepers” between the Creators and their audience, often controlling what Artists/works get seen by audiences and how they are presented. This destroys the Creator’s Artistic freedom to make the work they want to make and let it be presented to potential Audiences in its most clear and honest fashion. It also pigeonholes the audiences into only being exposed to “approved” content from “money-making” creators. In addition, it unduly charges the Artist—taking their hard-earned profits away. With NFTs, as well as Crypto as a whole, Social Media, and independent distribution services, the need for mainstream Distribution studios is going away. Creators can now directly interface with their fanbase, receive funding if needed, and then create and distribute their works organically to their Audiences as they see fit. In addition, with NFTs specifically, the creators can copyright and monetize their works in new and unique ways to lend further versatility to their portfolio. This is the exact Avenue my Company “Foxhole Labs” is taking with our Maiden project—“REPOd”. “REPOd”, as well as all our films and TV shows, is fully designed to be integrated with NFT technology to turn our Audience into a Community. Now, fans around the world will be able to become involved with the show in various capacities, including Voting rights, BTS content, invites to cast parties/screenings, and more, all through the purchase of NFTs. It’s amazing.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I’d say it is multi-fold. As an Actor, I love the chance to explore and step into different lives and situations through the embodiment of various roles. I get the chance to experience different(often INSANE) situations and feel what it might be like to live in another’s shoes for a time. The entire process allows me to explore and contact different parts of myself, learning and growing as I do. It’s addictive. As a producer, I dig being able to build teams and help foster relationships with Artists of different disciplines, bringing them together and creating something sick in the process. Then, watching the impact of the final product on the team and audience is a surreal experience. There is nothing quite like watching people’s reactions as they take in your work and are moved and affected by it. Then being able to stand there with the team and say, “Hell yes, that was us. We made that.” I love receiving fan mail on Social Media from people around the world, sharing their thoughts and stories of how some of the work impacted their lives and inspired them. Everyone’s life journey is different, and hearing about the various ways my works strike different people at different times is a cool and unique experience.
