We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Mcdougall. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
David, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Yes- I like to say, “ I painted myself into this corner..” My work is very uncharacteristic for Northern Wyoming and sells like it. If you want a Canvas Rebel I fit the bill, but I have stuck to my vision and haven’t buckled to doing paintings that I know I could sell
David, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My interest in art goes back to the early ‘70’s when I changed my major from English literature to Art. I never looked back. I received a BA in art from Humboldt State College in 1972 and continued my education at the University of Illinois completing an MFA in Painting and then jumped into Life. After a brief teaching stint at the College of the Redwoods in Crescent City., California, I started doing many odd jobs. Painting has been on the back burner since an episode with cancer, and a dramatic move to Wyoming where my wonderful wife and I have lived for 18 years.
We opened Painted Skull Studio in 2016 and I had been painting my flyfishing clients. I retired as a professional flyfishing guide and started painting full time.
My work has changed dramatically. It now has a humorous, whimsical flavor.,I have clients all over the US and my career high points are having 2 paintings in the State Capital, one of which is in the Governor’s Office.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Business is my weakness
I’ve had museum shows and my work is recognized for its uniqueness, not for its sale ability.
I’m a Canvas Rebel . Not a marketing success
