We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Matlock. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
David, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I started this journey I was looking around the tattoo shop at artist’s equipment and I realized they were all the same, cheap and boring. You’re building a brand around yourself and your equipment should speak to that brand. Why be boring when you can stand out above the rest. When someone comes into a tattoo shop and sees a beautiful piece of furniture that catches their eye, they will automatically be more curious about your work and get a more professional vibe about you making you that much more likely to book them as a client. Stand up and stand out.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got in the fabrication industry right out of high-school in 2008. Working in a shop was fun, but there was no creative freedom. A friend of mine was a tattoo artists and asked me if I could make an armrest for him to use that would last longer than the cheap stuff everyone was buying online. We came up with a design and I hit the ground running. After that a few more artists wanted one, so I decided mabey this could be something that other artists around the country would like. With the industry lacking in style and individuality I made it a point to fill that void. An artist’s equipment should speak as much to their brand as their art. When you walked in to a tattoo shop, No one stood out. I wanted to change that. I love knowing that my pieces have created confidence and pride for the artists that use them. It’s taken them from being just another artist in the shop to being the center of attention when you walk in the room. There’s nothing like a beautiful piece of functional art to catch someone’s eye.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to create the most amazing pieces of art that speak to the tattoo artist’s creative style.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of this whole journey is seeing the pride that comes when the artists see their finished piece for the first time. Nothing better than the smiling faces.
