We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Masters. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
Hi David , thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I have always been passionate about art since I was a child. I remember spending hours drawing and painting, and I always loved to create new things. I decided to study art in college. I learned a lot about art history and theory, and I also had the opportunity to practice my skills in different art mediums. After college, I started working as a freelance artist. I have been working in the art industry for over 20 years now, and I am still passionate about creating art. I love being able to express myself through my art, and I love sharing my work with others.
My art is unique because each piece tells a surreal and abstract story from my life. My art has always been surreal and based on my experiences, but my style has changed drastically over the years. I started out studying photography, which taught me the importance of composition and lighting. I experimented with different compositional concepts and lighting techniques to find what worked best for me. As my art evolved, I became more interested in telling stories through my work. I no longer want people to fully understand the meaning of my art; I want them to feel something when they see it, whether it’s beauty or emotion. This concept makes me stand out as a unique artist.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My style has been developed through the experiences in my life. I create imaginative works of art by combining many photos into one surreal digital compilation. Most of the images I create develop in my mind as a result of feelings I experience at certain moments of my life. I’m not very good at communicating my feelings, so I have a genuine need to express my stories through the art I create. The feelings can be embarrassing or even childlike, and by utilizing these emotions, I can make some pretty interesting art. When a person views my art, I want to stir up thoughts and feelings. For me, if that does not happen, then it, as a piece of art, was unsuccessful.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As I mentioned, my art is inspired by my life experiences. Many non-creatives find it hard to understand that these experiences may have occurred 20 years ago. While a piece may be dramatic and feel sensitive, it is often only a story from my past. Things I have long since worked out in my own head. Now, I am sharing those experiences with others in the hope that they may find some meaning in them.
I believe that art can be a powerful tool for healing and understanding. By sharing my stories, I hope to connect with others who have had similar experiences and help them to feel less alone. I also hope that my art can inspire others to create their own art, and to use it as a way to process their own emotions and experiences.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A few years ago, I was in financial difficulty and was forced to take a receptionist job at a hostel in Guatemala. I worked six days a week for $2 an hour. Despite this, I continued to create art during that time. I would wake up early and work on my art. Then, after my job at the hostel, I would continue working on my art. Back then, I had no idea how I was going to sell my art. I only knew that I was not happy with your current situation and that I would need to start creating art to be sold.
I was determined to make my art career work, and I started by selling my work online. I also started networking with collectors and other artists. Eventually, I started to get more and more commissions, and I was able to quit my job at the hostel. I am now a full-time artist, and I am grateful for the hard work and determination that got me to where I am today.
