We were lucky to catch up with David Malek recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When your hobby becomes a passion and consumes you, that’s the moment you know you’ve found your purpose in life. That’s exactly what happened to me. Every waking hour was spent thinking and practicing magic.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into magic as a hobby. I remember enjoying it as a child when a friend used to have a magician at his birthday party. I was between the ages of seven and nine. But ti was not until I saw a really good amateur magician when I was about sixteen that I was blown away with close-up magic. I asked the magician to show me how to do a card trick and he did. However, it would be a few more years before I was bitten by the magic bug. My roommate in college got tired of seeing that same card trick over and over and gave me a book his brother had purchased from a late-night TV infomercial. I took the book (which I still have) and after classes each day I would learn a new card trick and perform it for my friends. Soon people began telling me about other tricks they had seen which prompted me to invent ways of accomplishing these tricks even though I had no prior knowledge of how magic worked. I kept on performing magic as a hobby after college but it was when I was paid more for a two-hour gig doing magic than I was for two weeks of work that I decided to make the switch. All I wanted to do was work my eight hours a day and then go home and practice but, because I was in management I had to work long days and sometimes a few weeks without a day off. These two factors contributed to my leaving my regular job to go work as a professional magician.
I provide professional magic entertainment along with comedy to adult audiences all over the world.. When people need after-dinner entertainment or perhaps just want to have some magic during a reception or cocktail hour I’m the one to turn to. In addition, I provide customized presentations at meetings, trade events, and even private parties.
What sets me apart is the fact that I am a natural-born entertainer who prides himself on being an original as well as an exceptional improvisational comedian. This is something not easy to find in magic, in fact, it’s almost non-existent. I provide strong unforgettable and inexplicable magic as well as situational comedy and that is what I pride myself on.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Personally, NTF’s to me are a scam. You must start with a tangible piece of art (in our world) and then go from there. If you can sell someone an NFT good for you. But I’ll never buy one. These are interesting ideas that someone has successfully brought to market, but to me, it’s like the Tulip Scam, If you remember the tulip scam, or Tulip Mania, was a period of speculation in the 17th century that drove the value of tulip bulbs to extremes. The tulip craze began in 1634 and ended in 1637. The price of tulip bulbs went up because people believed they could sell them for a profit. The tulip craze was popular because tulips were a costly and beautifully colored flower that was introduced to Europe from Turkey shortly after 1550.
Always remember the scam might change but the engine that drives the scam (human greed and larceny) is the same no matter what the scam is. Today it’s NFT’s and Crypto Currency. Sure you might be able to make some money, but stand back and look at it from a macro perspective and you’ll see it for what it really is.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I think the idea of paying people to do for you what they do best in order to help you is the most important lesson. Don’t try to do everything yourself. Hire people who are experts at what they do and focus on being the best you can be at what you do and you’ll go further much faster.
