We recently connected with David LAWD P and have shared our conversation below.
David, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve learned business strategy and business development from the ground up. Started as a musician and understood how important it is to create a brand that’s bigger than the artist. I did a lot of research on my own and started one of my first brands in 2017. Since then, I’ve been able to understand that when you invest energy everyday into your craft you are gradually manifesting your purpose. The skills that were most essential was consistency, being analytical, and dependable. Starting your business will have obstacles as well. Throughout the journey, I will have moments of self doubt and loneliness but most importantly I learned that all those emotions were temporary. I continued to thrive through those emotions but also showed myself gratitude. The art of gratitude has allowed me to accept and to remain positive through the journey.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My older brother exposed me to hip hop and I fell in love from there. I was writing poems, rap lyrics and screen plays since I was 12 years old. I got into fashion when I was in high school and understood that hip hop culture and storytelling influenced different styles all over the world. The art of storytelling became an essential purpose through all my creative mediums.
From The Arxhive is a lifestyle brand that highlights & celebrates the unique cultural history of the black diaspora through clothing apparel & curated events.
I’ve been able to provide my community/clients great experiences through music performances, pop up shops, and film screenings. These creative experiences were curated to inspire and motivate our community to network, gather information & improve mentality.
What sets me apart is how connected I am with the community. My brand “From The Arxhive” is not just a clothing line, we focus on community development as well. We were able to create a business innovation course for elementary kids to create, learn and design a business. We believe our work in the community is ongoing & consistent.
I am proud of this business innovation course and I want people to know it’s not just about selling you my creative art projects, it’s MAINLY about the story and the impact we are making.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I’ve read plenty of books and watched videos to help inspire me on a day to day. One of my favorite books to read is the Psychology of money, The Outliers, The Will to change, The Power of Now and the tipping point.
The videos I enjoy watching podcast interviews such as Black imaginations, high level conversations, earn your leisure and On purpose with Jay Shetty.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I decided to quit my job in 2018 to pursue being an artist full time. The mistake I made was quitting with no back up plan on how I will receive consistent income. The experiences was not always good. Creating became a burden and it was solely based on covering my expenses. I started to understand that working in schools will allow me to create with intention but also provide me income to start my own business.
Starting your business will have obstacles as well. Throughout the journey, I will have moments of self doubt and loneliness but most importantly I learned that all those emotions were temporary. I continued to thrive through those emotions by showing myself gratitude, mediation, & connecting with nature. Inner engineering has allowed me to accept and to remain positive through the journey. It keeps me from worrying so much and it allows me to be more resilient.
