Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Lakin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I would fall under the category of “self-taught” but truly, I learned from the community. Especially in the beginning, I learned from reading how others created similar things and slowly built my skill through experimentation, practice, and research. The most foundational skill is being able to self-analyze my own work, see where it is lacking, and improving on the next iteration. My biggest obstacle is usually my own self-criticism preventing me from moving forward. I would have improved much faster had I felt confident enough to call many projects “done” much sooner.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a costume and prop maker, also known as a “cosplayer” though I focus more on the creation of costumes and props rather than wearing them. I usually make items such as fantasy or sci-fi armor and weapons from TV and video games. My specialty is in 3D printing and modeling, airbrushing, and LEDs/electronics, though I have collected a wide spread of skills as the projects require, for example sewing, wig styling, and makeup. With every creation I try to bring fictional characters to life by creating extremely intricate, accurate reproductions that incorporate dynamic electronic effects to replicate the more fantastic elements of the source material.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
There is nothing quite like being able to create something in physical form that was once simply an idea. Additionally, being able to embody a character that I connect with is very empowering and allows me to explore many aspects of myself.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is intensely personal – what drives me is continual self improvement and expanding my skills to be able to create better in the future.
