We recently connected with David Kisan and have shared our conversation below.
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I am a third generation florist. My mother ran a direct to consumer flower business out of our childhood home. From working with her I learned a lot about entrepreneurship and floristry. It wasn’t until I moved to Minneapolis however that I started thinking about Sip ‘N Bloom. In 2019 there was big demand for DIY workshops like Painting with a Twist, Suc It Up Buttercup etc. No one was doing flowers in that format, and I saw an opportunity to use my existing skillset to fill the void. We launched in September of that year. The first event was a small private party, but a local bar manager happened to be in attendance. She instantly knew that was going to be a hit, and she hired us to teach monthly workshops in her venue. Everything since has grown out of that experience.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve always loved flower arranging, but I didn’t want to run a traditional floral practice. A lot of that work revolves around making hundreds of the same design. I like to keep it fresh. Sip ‘N Bloom is a reinvention of the traditional model. We provide the high quality ingredients and we allow our guests to put them together in combinations that fit their individual style. Along the way they learn best practices, floral care, and tips and tricks that florists use to make flowers look better and last longer.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Covid took a big hit on our business and we were forced to get really creative to serve our clientele. Luckily we had built relationships with bars and breweries that were also going though a tough time, and we partnered with them on bouquet pick up events, that drew in an audience and allowed a sense of community at a time when there wasn’t much of that.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I am a big believer in the bootstrap method, because it forces a founder to be scrappy and creative with the meager funds that they do have. I started Sip ‘N Bloom with about $5k with was my personal savings. There was little room for error and we had to optimize every opportunity we had in order to make it work. There were defiantly some scary days at the beginning, but it forged us into being a business that pivots quickly and does not turn away from opportunity.
