We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
David, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe a major key to success is truly loving what you do. You have to live and breathe it. Have a true passion for it. When you do it takes the feel of a job away. You can’t just start or do something just because it can make you money. There has to be a real love to fuel the drive and path to success. Nothing is always easy. There will be challenges, hurdles, pitfalls. The love is what will keep you focused and get you thru to the success story!
David, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is David King and I am the Founder/CEO of Cool Geekz. Cool Geekz is a Greater Atlanta area based company that specializes in custom home theater and security integration. We do all things a/v related including wire free tv installation, home theater and media rooms, security solutions, smart home, outdoor a/v solutions, and more!
I started Cool Geekz back in 2014. It started off with a small goal in mind initially for me to subsidize my then income as a sales manager. I was looking to try to bring in an additional $800-1k monthly. I put an add on Craigslist for tv mounting. I made $600 my 1st week! Needless to say the wheels in my head started turning and I set a goal to turn this into a real business!
I started using all the tools I had learned over my career in sales to advertise, develop, and grow Cool Geekz. The goal I set for myself to be comfortable to walk away from my secure, comfortable sales management salary was “when I’m able to consistently exceed my normal TAKE HOME PAY from my job, I know I can make Cool Geekz my #1 focus.” It took me 9 months to do it. I went on a vacation to Cancun, sent a letter of resignation to my former employer, and never looked back! Hands down this was the BEST decision of my adult life!
Cool Geekz has grown to become a well respected brand in the low voltage space. We have hundreds of 5 star reviews from happy clients that we’ve serviced over the past 8 years. We specialize in primarily residential and small business a/v solutions. I prefer to deal directly with the end users of the solutions that we provide, finding solutions for their specific needs, and bringing their visions to life!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Consistency, quality, and professionalism and what have been most effective for my growth. I focus on treating people how I expect to be treated. I’m very upfront and fair. No my company doesn’t have the cheapest pricing. That’s never been the strategy. What I do provide is quality work for a great value, respect of their time, do what was promised, and uphold a professional demeanor.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My social media audience was built initially with friends from my personal page. My focus has always been gaining followers that can become clients and utilize the products my brand sells. The goal has never been to be social media famous with followers everywhere. Cool Geekz provides services to a specific market so I’ve always done things to grow followers in MY market.
Here’s some tips that I could share for growth:
– Hashtags are your friend. Use hashtags that are relevant to what you are trying to sell, who you’re looking to attract, geographic area that you’re located, etc.
– Be consistent with posting content.
– Keep your page professional – this represents your brand!
– Proofread posts!
