We recently connected with David Kell and have shared our conversation below.
David, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
Deciding to build my own workshop has been the key investment to the business. It allowed me sufficient space to store my material, tools, and hard work. It started with wood burning out of the living room, and quickly the orders began to outgrow my working environment. It took about a year for my father and I to complete the building in our backyard. Ever since, my family has always known where to find me- out in the workshop!

David, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Kell Creations was born out of the free time created by the pandemic. I always had an interest in wood working, and I decided to take a step towards making it a business. Laser engraving custom wood ornaments was the perfect entry point for me, and within a few weeks of doing it I had already sold over 200. I frequently make ornaments, cheeseboards, cutting boards, and coasters. I love a challenge though, so my favorite projects have been the custom orders. I have crafted mirrors, a toy chest, and a swing, but the project I am most proud of so far is a custom chess board. I take pride in taking my time with every order and putting love into them as if they were for myself. The quality of my work is more important to me than the quantity of my orders.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
It was May 1st, 2005. I had just entered the world. Passed all around the room, I finally made it into the arms of Anna Kell. My oldest sister has always been in my corner, and she was the first to get on board with the business. Anna is responsible for our social media presence, keeping track of orders, and taking payments. She goes with me to markets and has been an invaluable business partner.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth has been most effective for me. The most popular item has been the ornaments, and the excitement spreads easily when they are seen on friends or family’s Christmas trees.
