Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Jordan Jr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David , appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I’m forever indebted to my parents. Everything starts with them. From day one their love, guidance, wisdom, faith and belief and support of all of my goals are the reason that I have attained the successes I’ve accomplished in my life in multiple areas. My parents taught me that through faith in GOD and with hard work all things will come to pass and be revealed to me. My parents made sacrifices to ensure that I (and my sister) had all of the necessities needed for a productive and positive life and the opportunities to be successful. My mother and father instilled in me the importance of academic excellence prior to me attending pre-school and the importance and discipline required to become a scholar inspired me in all areas of my life. As a student, I’ve been a scholar from elementary school all the way through my post-graduate education studies. As an athlete I was able to achieve success as a basketball player as interscholastic student-athlete, becoming an NCAA Division I athlete and playing basketball on the professional level. As an entrepreneur, my mother gave me the vision for ESHE Magazine, and her and my father have supported me unconditionally in my pursuit of excellence in all areas of my life. I’m forever grateful to them.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m the founder and Editor-In-Chief of ESHE Magazine Inc., an international digital publication. I’ve always had a tremendous interest in the world of media, history, reading and writing. As a child, I was fascinated by history in many areas of life; sports, Black History, World History, US History and entertainment. Whenever I would go to the Library, I would always wonder to the biography/autobiography sections and check out books and videos on individuals that fascinated me and piqued my interest. From Malcolm X, to Wilt Chamberlain, to Magic Johnson, to John F. Kennedy, books on Ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire, all of these things fed my interest in obtaining knowledge, information and inspiration and a young child growing up in Memphis, Tennessee. Just as much as I watched sports on television, television shows and movies, I equally watched interviews on television, particularly the news and different media outlets. There was no social media then, so you had to watch everything either live, or once a week when it came on at a particular time. Watching Ed Bradley on 60 Minutes, Dan Rather on CBS, Ed Gordon on BET, Peter Jennings on ABC, Ahmad Rashad on NBA Inside Stuff, Roy Firestone on ESPN on Up Close and listening to Tom Joyner on the radio all inspired me to pursue my passion of sharing news and information with the world. In high I would co-host and produce television shows on our on campus high school network, BHS-Live (at Bolton High School) and would continue to perfect my skills in the realm of mass communications as an undergraduate student at Mississippi Valley State University and the University of Tennessee at Martin. It was during my time at UT-Martin that I had the opportunity to expound on opportunities in communications in both radio and journalism as I wrote various article for the campus paper, “The Pacer” as well as hosting my own weekly radio show “The Thursday Nite Jump-Off” on 90.3 FM, WUTM The Hawk. Upon graduation, as I pursued a career in professional basketball, I wrote out the blueprint for the things I wanted to do in the world of media. I knew it was something that I wanted to do, and wanted to be fully prepared when the opportunity came.
In 2013, the company I was working for eliminated my position and it was at that time the seeds for ESHE Magazine was planted. After having a conversation with my mother about opportunities and things I wanted to do career wise, she told me it was time to do my own thing. I had the knowledge and time to make it happen and it was also something that was needed in media. I felt the importance of being a vessel for people to tell their story, in their words to the world. I felt it was important to recognize history on a continuous basis, with facts and with a person, or people that made the history happen. Thus ESHE Magazine began March 1st 2014.
ESHE aims to highlight the great things people are doing all over the world. The magazine shines positive light on various areas of life from education, to medicine, to sports, to entertainment, to fashion. Positivity inspires people to go forward. We are all able to be a light for somebody in the world, whether it’s somebody we know or a complete stranger. Through exclusive interviews, unique perspectives, rare content and historical information, ESHE is able to grasp all readers. We have readers and subscribers in over 100 countries. Those that know will be refreshed and those that don’t know will be enlightened. The motto for ESHE Magazine is “ESHE. Your Life, Your Thoughts, Your World.” This means you can control your life and your world by what you put into it and how you allow it to influence your life.
As the founder and Editor-In-Chief of ESHE Magazine, I am most proud of the fact that my magazine has been a media outlet that has been able to reach the world though positivity. There are people globally that want to be recognized for the great things they’ve accomplished and the changes they are making in the world for the betterment of all; ESHE Magazine makes it a priority to share the stories with the world.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Be genuine. Many people on social media will follow trends for likes, clicks and reshares/reposts. That is good for initial interaction and possibly going viral. But is there substance in that? Will that enhance your reputation as a business? Or will it limit your reach. Being authentic on social media is the same thing one should do in real life, and it is in that way that genuine connections are made and genuine supporters are found.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My work. I put in a tremendous amount of time and hard work to make ESHE Magazine what it is. As I’ve worked with various clients across the world, it has been my work and commitment to sharing the lives of other people through words that has enabled me to be able to obtain new clients. Various publicists, companies and organizations reach out to me to collaborate. This is the ultimate sign of respect and appreciation for the work that I love doing. It is a tremendous blessing from GOD to be able to have clients and connect with people all over the world.
