We were lucky to catch up with David Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I remember coming home from school and my older brother Micheal had me listen to Craig Mack “Flavor In Ya Ear”. Something hit me at that moment that made me wanted to pursue a career in music. It was that exact moment I feel in love with Hip Hop and wanted to be apart of it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Hip Hop artist from Detroit, MI. I would consider myself a conscience Rapper. I always try to present a message in my music, to be a inspiration. To let people know that you have to be yourself unconditionally. Getting to know yourself is a never ending journey, but it’s definitely worth it. Society always tries to tell us who we should be, but it’s us that should tell society who we are. I have a song that I released back in 2019 called “Free To Be Me”. It’s pretty self explanatory, being a unapologetic version of you at all times. Any time I get the opportunity to create and perform my music is moment to share my message and hopefully inspire someone.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I am a Hugh student of Dr. Eric Thomas. He’s a Motivational speaker, Preacher, Entrepreneur, amongst other things. He has a brand new book called “YOU OWE YOU”. I’m currently listening to the audio book and I just ordered the hard copy as well. The book it about making commitments to yourself to be the best version of your self as possible. It’s about understanding that you have to make the best out of your life. From the time you wake up to the time you go back to bed, you have to make the most of the time that GOD has given you. Making the adjustments and eliminating all excuses in order to have the life that you desire. Everyday it’s YOU VS YOU therefore YOU OWE YOU.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
To be very honest…………..I NEVER really had any support in my music. I really don’t know what support feels like. I’ve had family and friends give me excuses on why they don’t support me. But I had to learn to support myself. Rejection teaches me that even the people in your corner may not stand next to you when you need them the most. But you can NEVER not be there for yourself. My vision is my vision, my journey is my journey, my passion is my passion. I owe it to myself to make my biggest desires manifest, behind every no is a yes.
