Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Johns. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, David thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
One of the biggest trends in photography is really one of the biggest trends in culture. Reels. Putting yourself out there via videos using social media platforms has encouraged most business owners, influencers and people to gain an audience to showcase their work or really, anything. This is something I was not prepared for to say the least. I love photography because I do not have to worry about myself being in front of a camera. Social media has shifted in a way that practically forces people like myself to participate or disappear (at least in social media via algorithms).
Oh, and I’ve noticed an uptick in realism and street photography. (Which I am a huge fan.)

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is David Johns and I have been into photography for a long time. I always loved portraiture the most. I would annoy just about anyone around me, unloading my camera onto friends as often as possible. I figured I would take a shot at making it a small business of mine doing headshots and portrait sessions for families and artists while dabbling into the world of weddings as well. Outside of the business side of things, I am absolutely enamored with street/concert and nature photography. I sometimes lend my services with local newspapers and my proudest moments in my career is still seeing my name printed alongside my photos. As a business, working with clients can have its moments and can be frustrating for me or the client. I often try and be as much of myself around them to soften the edges so we can all relax and get the best shots possible. I should know, I get very nervous being in front of cameras myself, which is why you’ll probably never see me to TikToks or Reels.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Man, I dabble in crypto but I still do not understand this NFT fad. Why would anyone pay thousands of dollars for a digital graphic of a monkey?

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
When I first started, all I would hear about is “word of mouth” and didn’t really understand. I mean, I get it in a sense, but why was it not working for me? I took cool pics, so wheres the money? Wheres all the clients? Once there was some momentum with paying clients, I could not believe how many new clients were from past client referrals or repeat clients, turned friends. Guys, I get it now. Word of mouth works! But you have to keep plugging away at it for it to work for you.
