We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Homan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
David, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I came from the world of global philanthropy. Every day someone new had a brilliant idea–they’d do their own thing their own way, and ask everyone else to fund it–ignoring experts with deep experience, other charities doing related work, and then be surprised when their impact wasn’t solved, even if their name was on the building. I realized this had to stop and that there was a better way to change the world than raise money and fulfill one cause, and it came about because I purposely sought diversity in my network, and accidentally built a network of Connectors.
A decade ago I got out of my comfort zone, and became involved in numerous causes unrelated to my own as CEO of a global arts charity. But what I really did was find the connector, the person who is the glue behind all relationships, and I built a community of them.
We have the trust to convince, strong-arm, and encourage impact to be more collaborative both as investing and philanthropy, towards the greater good.
Orchestrated Connecting, my 8+ year old purposeful community, is the “network of networks” making relationship value valued, and connecting the most connected people to fulfill their needs, not just the needs of others.
David, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Orchestrated Connecting is a methodology for how to build purposeful communities and live purposefully, with a book coming out this Fall (2024) sharing and analyzing the secrets of our “OC” community in its 8th year. With over 45 events in the US (and soon Canada and the UK) annually, and a network of 1500 “action oriented natural givers” that I would leave my kids with, we embrace the mindset that change happens through collaboration with high integrity players. Orchestrated Relationships, our impact advisory firm, works with mission drive family offices, funds, companies, and nonprofits to scale their growth through ecosystem building and strategic repositioning/framing of each client.
There are few businesses that build connections at this level, and only one community to date that is a network to connect connectors to each other. As a classical composer, CEO David Homan works to find the “resonance” between people and help them soar through matching two “asks” to each other.
Our true impact is invisible unless you “honor the chain” of connections, creating new strong + trusted relationships quickly through purposeful connecting and community building.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
From running a global charity I realized I needed to build Orchestrated Connecting as a community. By aggregating all those who helped give me leads to more philanthropy, I was both fulfilling my responsibilities as well as accelerating theirs. Yet I still was too timid to jump in fully as I didn’t have my business model correct even though every event I held sold out. After several years working in a major family office incubating a film company, necessity forced my hand, and during Covid I spoke to 140 of my network and built my advisory firm around the work I had modeled during my stint at the family office to create the proper milestones of strategy, coaching and growth for each client.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I do this through honesty. About my successes and failures, and how much work something really takes. Including the secret work that comes from connecting with people and the time it takes to engage + support them as they support me. I also invite people into a private network that elevates everyone in it, so whether they are a client, a former client, or just a member of the community, they understand it is a privilege to be part of this group.
