We were lucky to catch up with David Holowchak recently and have shared our conversation below.
David, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
Being a sole proprietor, everything is done solo, social media included. I like to be close to all forms of promotion for my brands so that I know what I’m getting and what I’m putting out there. I do encourage a lot of our followers, friends, and general persons to tag and share their stories and photos through hashtags and tagging, as long as it’s relatable to what we stand for and our business environment. I will say it can be very draining and difficult at times to drum up content or be on top of the media you need to stay relevant, when you just want to be in the moment or concentrating on playing. On the other hand, promoting things you love and getting feedback is always great and can be very beneficial at times.
David, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the golf brand business because I wanted to be closer to the game, to be a part of it, and I’ve always wanted to see my brands on equipment, apparel, and players. Originally I started as a golf event planning service, setting up golf outings and associated bookings, games, trips, etc. for those with neither the time nor the patience to canvass the multitude of resorts and courses, as well as the exhausting amount of time it can take to set up pairings and games to go along with the rounds. I did that for a few months to years before the well seemed to dry up. So I pivoted to branding after looking at other companies and organizations that were already out there, putting out putter covers and apparel. Covers was big business when we first started and I had always loved graphic design so I started creating putter cover designs and publishing them across social media, as well as logos and a media presence by reviewing courses and doing some golf influencing.
The brand GOLF NOMAD stems from the fact that in any given day I would “go where the golf takes me,” driving around the great golf state of Michigan, playing courses and having new experiences with the game. Hence, becoming a bit of a nomad myself.
I would say that my golf brand, GOLF NOMAD, really represents anyone and everyone. We’re totally inclusive and we love sharing stories, experiences, and building relationships with our #NOMADNATION. We try to offer something for everyone, even doing custom work for clients and customers. We work with local courses and organizations to grow our brand and we tend to stand out a bit with our apparel. I really think our putter covers are the stars however. They tend to appeal to a lot of people and we only do small batch orders so we’ve had several sell out already. I really hope Golf Nomad will become a staple in the industry someday. But, we will always claim Michigan as our home and always have a bit of it in our blood and gear.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
We promote our NOMADNATION to all of our customers and across social media platforms. We invite everyone to tag and post their golf stories and join us, as well as put on golf outings, offer points redeemable on our store site, and a subscriber list to ensure they are kept in the know when new products are launched or something is going on.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Biggest pivot for GOLF NOMAD was going from event planning to an actual brand. Started booking outings and golf trips, doing set ups and games but that really didn’t take off as well as I had hoped. After a few years, we turned to branding and trying to build up a golf apparel and gear company that would appeal to all. We started with apparel and putter covers and now we offer golf bags, putters, apparel, ball markers and more with different styles and designs, as well as we offer custom design work for clients and customers too.
