Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Gutiérrez Molina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
When you say you are an artist or a dancer, everybody asks you, do you make a living out of it? Yes, being an artist is also a profession.
When you start in this world, nobody explains to you that dreams have such a high cost, being an artist requires a lot of perseverance and sacrifice, if we were to calculate the price of the hours we put into our projects the accounts would not work out.
Nowadays we artists have a double task, to work on our inspiring artistic vein and to be entrepreneurs at the same time. Our sector evolves at a frenetic pace and we have to be fully updated to offer the public something different and unique, therefore, we must work constantly as does a basic business structure (Marketing, Sales, Human Resources, …..).
Sometimes one wonders if it would be better to be a salaried worker in an ordinary job, and the answer is NO, despite all the sacrifices one makes, the love for dance and art is priceless, it is something inate and irreplaceable.

David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For all the readers who are reading me today for the first time, I am David Gutiérrez, director of the Barcelona Flamenco Ballet, and professional flamenco dancer.
I started dancing when I was only 4 years old, it was something unusual, for me it started as a child’s game, and with the passing of time it ended up being my great passion.
Throughout my professional career, I have been able to learn from great masters of dance, and I have been part of important dance companies that have given me the necessary training to be the professional I am today.
Today I direct one of the most important flamenco dance companies in the world, and I am proud to represent the name of Barcelona around the world. I have been lucky enough to show my art in the most important theatres in the world such as the National Theatre of China, the National Theatre of Romania, the National Theatre of Moldova, and I have participated in numerous festivals of great relevance in the performing arts in the world.
I have also received the recognition of numerous governmental institutions that endorse my work around the world, all thanks to the effort I have made during all these years of my professional career.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I am lucky that thanks to my profession I have been able to know many countries and cultures, and under my perception culture and art are making a small setback in our society.
I feel that the new generations are not connected to consuming art, I see less and less young people who are motivated to go to the theatre or visit a museum, therefore, in this new era of the technology revolution we must also use it as a new form of education.
By this I mean that the new technologies must serve as a learning axis to educate our society, art and culture is the root of our history on earth.
I encourage everyone to go to the theatre and to a museum once in their life, it is rich in knowledge.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist, the most gratifying part of my career is the moment of applause from the public, that moment is a total satisfaction.
I also can’t forget the moments when young people want to learn from your experiences, or when you receive awards and recognition, everything in the end leads to people praising your work.
