We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Gibbs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, David thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
The most unexpected problem I have ever had in my business is myself. It took some time for me to build a healthy mindset around coaching my clients. I wanted the dream for them so much, I found myself angry when they didn’t do what I wanted them to. My wife sat me down one day and asked if I should be coaching at all? I thought about it for a long time and realized that I needed a mindset shift. I needed to change my approach and heart toward my client. They are the Hero and I am the Guide. To be a great coach I need to meet my clients where they are at and help them build the muscles to go where they want to go. Not where I think they should go or want them to go. Doing that revitalized my excitement for my business and helped me become better at my job. Many more folks have been successful because of how I dealt with my problem employee. . . Me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started by realizing that sharing my personal financial journey really helped people. So, I went on a search to find out how I could use my experience in my own practice. I was then trained as a financial coach and began my practice. It is such a joy to guide clients to a better life.
My coaching practice has changed over the years. I now help folks with finances, career and pretty much anything else that comes up in our coaching sessions. I have found over my five years of business that everything is connected. Our lives are a big circle of momentum and interconnectedness. Everything affects everything else in our lives. If there is a squeaky wheel (Bad sleep) it might hurt another area of our life (work performance). I guide my clients to achieve the dreams they want to achieve.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Absolutely building relationships with my colleagues and other businesses is the number one way. We need others at all times of our lives. Relationships are key in anything we want to do as human beings. I have found that connecting and building good relationships and partnerships with other businesses has grown my practice with quality.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
My favorite stories are when a client comes around after a long time of me reaching out. I have found that consistency and true caring covers everything. I never give up on folks who reach out for help, even when they don’t pick up the phone and reach back out to me. I have had numerous clients finally connect with me after years. When we do connect, they are very thankful that I didn’t give up on them. Finances and personal issues can be very embarrassing for clients so I keep that in mind as I build a relationship that will hopefully lead to a coaching client.
