We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Fuselier a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
It was a few different things that inspired me to pursue a career creating music. When I was in high school it was 1996 which I was a band student who played a few brass instruments so that is where I would say my background as a music creator came from. Also around that time is what many hip hop fans would call the golden era of hip hop. I became a fan of Dr. Dre for example and then there was also a lot of other producers/ production teams who also started getting heard on artists like Jay Z , Nas , OutKast and a few other artists that I was a fan of albums and I’d say that they have all inspired me in some way.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a music creator in some way for most of my life, but when I had actually started making beats it was 2002 at that time I came across a music making program called Magix Music Studio it was very basic , mainly layering loops to create instrumentals. Though I never released anything I created with Magix Music Studio it was kind of showing me what I could do with creating beats. Around that time it was a little harder to build a following there was no social media so I made beats mostly as a hobby. It wasn’t until 2005 I had been in Dallas at that point a year moving from Lafayette, Louisiana and then I came across another Beatmaking program called Reason 3 and this one allowed me to do more in terms of creating, along with meeting a music mentor another producer by the name of 3-D (RIP) really taught me more about making beats. I had also met his brother Boome who in 2009 released an album titled New King On The Block I produced 2 tracks on Trial Girl & the intro to the album. Then from there the rest is history that led to other opportunities working with other artists, getting music publishing deals & also being an artist. Currently I am still offering services to other artist for instrumentals, I host my podcast the Major Music Lounge which we talk to other music creators about their journey as a creator and I am still an active artist working on a few upcoming releases.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I think of resiliency I think of the year 2014 & even this year to some degree 2023. When it comes to 2014 I had got into a bad car accident where I got injured in May of that year, I was also putting the final touches on an album in hindsight maybe I shouldn’t have released at that time cause it wasn’t truly finished. About 2 months later my father passed away. I had no car I was taking busses to and from work I barely had time to work on any music and I didn’t feel like even working on anything new. It was an artist by the name of Qwest who reached out to me and wanted to work with me, that kind of re ignited the drive that I had and got me back to creating. Also in this year it’s been on and off creating due to a surgery I had earlier this year I am still recovering from but I’ve still found ways to continue to create and do the podcast. I told both stories because things in life will come up but if you truly love doing something you will find the time to do it. I understand some circumstances don’t allow you to but sometimes creating helps get my mind in a much better place.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support indie music, a lot of our fans are people that we don’t know personally. There is a lot of time and money that goes into creating . If you know someone who is an independent artist, take the time to show them support by listening, sharing and actually interacting with post you see from them about what they do. From a creators standpoint it’s up to us to support each other , find ways to promote our brands and grow our followings not only online but also locally. Attend some local events, perform at open mics, interact more in person.
