Today we’d like to introduce you to David Franklin.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
For me, my musical journey started when I was 8 years old. I first had my introduction to music growing up hearing praise and worship (church) music being played in my household, which was great. Even though some of it was more upbeat and enticing to me than others, it wasn’t until I heard Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 that I really got interested in music, and specifically singing for myself. As time went on, having heard other forms of mainstream music and hearing how creative and expressive different styles of production and vocal delivery were, it ultimately expanded me, and helped me find other sounds that better encapsulated all that my musical gift had to offer. As I heard all this, and always knew what was right as far as what messages were healthy, and what messages were unhealthy to be putting out into the atmosphere, it felt utterly clear and only right to use the various creative gifts God put in this world for the right purpose; to contribute something for the greater good.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, not by any means. I’ve run into challenges such as having others misunderstand my vision or perspective as an artist at times, disagree, etc. However, finding, and knowing my God given purpose has ultimately been what’s kept me grounded and standing firm in what I’m doing.
Knowing I’m always making an effort to stand up for what’s right, what’s truthful, and what I feel in my heart is always what continues to push me forward despite the opposition from others. Other challenges I’ve faced include bearing the weight of being different in some cases; where I had these gifts and perspectives to share with everyone, but not everyone around me fully accepted it because it was unlike what was common amongst my peers at the time. This especially was true when some people around me felt that singing was laughable, because it wasn’t rap music like most people my age seemed to only be into back then, or in some cases where they were extremely harsh and judgemental towards it for whatever reason. Many people from my junior high and high school were very petty and hard to please often times.
On the other hand, many have openly accepted and respected what I’ve been doing from the very beginning and only continued to push and motivate me forward with it. Thankfully, I can say I’ve had WAY more support than not for my singing gift, and have had many friends, family members, etc. who were fascinated and seemingly in love with what I was doing, which especially made all the difference and told me to keep going with it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am both a music artist, as well as a visual artist. Specifically, I create my own music, and would define myself as a Contemporary Christian/R&B artist, and am also a Service/Experience Designer. The latter entails identifying a need for designing something, figuring out what’s necessary to make it happen, and creating the experience that comes with it. Being a creative overall, I’ve always known has been my strongsuit, as a person. I’ve really gravitated towards being original, true to myself, true to my vision, and wanting to be different overall as a person for as long as I can remember.
I feel most proud of the creative gift that’s been put within me. Thankfully, since I was young, many have said I was very innovative and creative as a person, having designed various things such as 3D and 2D model cars, characters and trinkets from my favorite tv shows, etc. From the time I was 5 years old at least, I’ve been creating something. As I got older, my interests only expanded, and I became more in command of my creative gift, and it also expanded into the music realm as well by the time I was eight years old. I feel that my eye for design, and creative vision as a whole that’s within me is what makes me different, along with the quirkiness that comes with that.
However, the musical creativity gift with making my own music didn’t start until I was 19 years old in full force, when I decided to write my first music album after thinking it over for some time. I know for sure that visual art, and music are the two things I’d like to do for years to come, but am still determining the full direction I want to take my design gift, and am just continuing to create various forms of art. Overall, I know I want to design or create more than just one form of art, and the same can be said for both my design work and music. I want to keep pushing both forward to the fullest and use everything that’s been put within me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I would say that luck hasn’t really been a factor in this to me knowing that everything in life is intentional, especially God’s plan and his timing. I would moreso say that God’s favor has been ever present on my life and everything I’m doing creatively has been blessed by him. Knowing that I’m trusting and using it all for him first, I’ve been hard at work every single day trying to push the envelope and move forward with everything somehow some way. So when a breakthrough does finally come through, I know it’s a well earned, hard fought blessing that I’ve rightfully worked hard for and have been blessed with.
