We recently connected with David Flores and have shared our conversation below.
David , appreciate you joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
I was about 17 when I was asked to paint a local car wash in my neighborhood after showing the owner samples of my work. Being a kid at the time getting paid $200 to paint letters on the side of the buildiing felt like I won the lottery.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is David “skeez181” Flores. I am a self taught artist, muralist, art instructor, and sculptor from Houston Texas. My specialty is spray paint. I began experimenting with aerosol paints in 1989 after evolving from drawing hign school house party flyers. That quickly evolved to curating my own hip hop shows which consisted of break dancing, DJ’s, MCs and graffiti artists from my neighborhood. I’m fortunate enough to say I’ve been hired by many numerous companies and musicians including Coca-Cola Company, Universal Records and many local organizations in Houston. I teach a spray paint can control class developed based on my 30 year experience. One of my pinnacle moments as an artist is when I was hired to paint for Roger Waters of Pink Floyd during one his Texas concert tours. I’m also very proud to say that I’m in a book called “The History of American Graffiti” you can follow and discover my work on my IG: @skeez181
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
After having a few jobs that consisted of traveling, I’ve developed kinda like this bucket list of painting at least one mural in every city. I just want to leave a legacy of art behind since I don’t have any kids!
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Yes one of my favorite and most inspirational books is called “Life and Def” by Russell Simmons.
