Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Enloe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
The first non-friend, non-family dollar – that was a milestone I’ll never forget!
It all started at the local farmers market, right at the beginning of the pandemic, when everyone was craving in-person connections and experiences. I decided to set up a Popup Photo Studio, offering free photos as a means to meet families and get their email addresses. It turned out to be the perfect blend of fun and social distance.
On my first day with the popup, I met something like 10 families. It was a lot of fun – I’m not a studio photographer so instead of posing I just tried to make everyone laugh. A few moms asked if I did private family sessions and how much I charged.
I tried to play it cool, but inside, I was bubbling over with excitement. We set up a full session, and just like that, I had my first official client! When they paid me, it wasn’t just about the money, it was validation. A sign that this crazy leap into photography was worth it.
The Popup Studio allowed me to meet local families, surprise them with something free, and then stay in touch via email – a magic combination that would serve me well for years. It’s all about those personal connections and the excitement of sharing a moment.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m David Enloe, the guy who swapped the cockpit of a private jet for a camera. I couldn’t be happier about it.
My journey into photography started in high school, where I’d spend hours after school in the darkroom. Fast forward through a stint in engineering school, a near-miss with medical school, and eight years as a pilot, and I finally returned to my true passion: photography.
I founded The Enloe Creative with a focus on family portraits. I love capturing those genuine, heartwarming moments that connect us to each other. But my job doesn’t end when I click the shutter. I build handcrafted picture frames made from locally sourced, upcycled wood, giving my clients a unique piece of San Francisco to pair with their printed photos.
What sets me apart? It’s the whole experience. From the first inquiry to the final framed photo, I strive to make everything seamless and enjoyable. My sessions are relaxed and stress-free, designed for busy parents who juggle high-stress jobs and hectic schedules but still understand the importance of documenting their lives in an artistic way.
I’m most proud of creating a sustainable business that balances professionalism with a personal touch.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My biggest pivot came when I decided to leave aviation. I was cruising at 30,000 feet, flying private jets, and mingling with the uber-wealthy. Sounds glamorous, right? But it left me feeling unfulfilled. The constant grind and environmental impact of private aviation didn’t sit well with me.
So, I did a complete 180 and returned to my first love, photography. It wasn’t an easy decision – I had invested years into my aviation career. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t where my heart was. I wanted to create something meaningful and sustainable, something that made people happy and allowed me to live my values.
That’s how The Enloe Creative was born. It was a leap of faith, but one that paid off in spades. I found my niche in family photography and discovered a way to incorporate my passion for sustainability by crafting custom picture frames from upcycled wood. It was a challenging pivot, but it led me to a more fulfilling and balanced life.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely! My creative journey is driven by the goal of capturing and preserving the beauty of family life in a way that’s authentic, joyful, and sustainable. I’m on a mission to provide busy parents with a stress-free photography experience that results in thoughtful, meaningful images they’ll treasure for a lifetime.
Sustainability is also at the core of everything I do. From being a 1% For the Planet member business to becoming a certified California Green Business, I’m committed to making choices that are good for both my clients and the planet. It’s not just about taking beautiful photos; it’s about doing so in a way that aligns with my values and contributes to a more sustainable future.
