We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Diaz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
David, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Late 90s and early 2000’s. Watching Rap A Lot, Bad Boy, Death Row, No Limit, Roc A Fella, and even Dopehouse Records inspired me to know that if they did it, I could as well.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the industry by first jumping into the Christian hiphop scene. Managed a group and I’d book them shows and press up mixtapes, and sell them.
Then I started another venture called Versastyle Ent. Managed another aristas and a few DJs.
Not too long after that failed, is when I met Big Gerb (RIP) via MySpace and I asked if i could manage him. He said yes, and I wanted a name for my “management” company and it’s when I heard a white woman’s voice saying “them damn Mexicans” and it stuck.
Now we’ve turned that into a brand that hosts events, toy drives, award winning podcast, merchandise, digital distribution company, and is managing an artist by the name of Majin Ryah from San Antonio Texas.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
It was all very simple. I showed love. Built my audience one by one. Attending events in public and networking and genuinely connecting with others.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Over the last 5 years I’ve had “team members” and many others who have quit on me and leave. I kept going. I could’ve easily folded but I didn’t. The result, the brand is bigger and better than it’s ever been.
