We were lucky to catch up with David Diaz recently and have shared our conversation below.
David, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
People usually assume that because a majority of my songs are conceptually melancholic or sad, I must be extremely depressed every single day of my life. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
I guess the people who make that assumption don’t get that a human being is capable of being emotionally mature and intelligent enough to be able to use sadness as a tool. I firmly believe that sadness is necessary in the process of finding happiness or inner peace. It’s been a huge part of my healing process since I could remember.
So, I have a very healthy relationship with sadness and I really wish more people did too.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For people who may not have read about me before, I am a singer, songwriter, recording artist, philosopher, musician, engineer, burrito lover…the list goes on. Haha.
I started singing in 2014 when I began taking classes as a music major, as well as private voice lessons. Then, eventually I decided that studying music wasn’t for me anymore, so I changed my major to philosophy and it’s what inspired me to start a professional career in music.
I think my studies in philosophy is what sets me apart from other artists in the industry. I have such a wellspring of inspiration to pull from and philosophy has changed my life and my music. So, I’ve always embraced the fact that it makes me a little bit different.
What I want people to know about me is that what you see is what you get. I don’t have a gimmick or a shtick. Some artists do, and that’s great, but I don’t. I try to be as relatable, real, and authentic as I can possibly be. It’s probably my proudest accomplishment as an artist and as a human being. Being authentic to who you are is harder than it seems, but once you learn to stop wearing different masks for different people, you learn who you are and what makes you special.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Don’t do it. Haha! From what I’ve been told by people in the financial space, it’s unregulated, it’ll die off soon, and it’s a scam.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Making connections with my fans and listeners will always be the most rewarding feeling! I can’t tell you how insanely amazing it feels to get a message from a fan saying that they related so strongly to my music and lyrics. It’s always been a goal, to build connections and help people feel like they’re less alone because there is at least one person out there that knows and understands how they feel. It’s truly incredible!
