Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Caploe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I grew up in a musical home. My dad is a musician, so I was lucky to be exposed to so much great music at a young age and to have access to instruments. My dad tried to reach me how to play guitar when I was really young but I didn’t really pick it up for myself till I was in middle school. I feel in love with making songs on the guitar and in the computer, but felt strongly that I didn’t want to pursue a career in music. I had seen my parents struggle and wanted to do something else with my life. It wasn’t until I was going to college, when music really helped me get through a rough patch in my life, that I realized music was so important to me. I left school and started pursuing music and haven’t looked back. It is a struggle at times but I’m so happy that decided to pursue something that brings me so much life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For the past 9 years I have been working in music as a songwriter, producer, manger and most notably the singer of the band Hate Drugs.
Hate Drugs started in the summer of 2014 when I self released an EP and the band formed soon after. We’ve been lucky enough to tour all over the states and release music that has gotten millions of streams online. We’ve remained independent since our inception. It has been a lot of work, but we’ve learned so much about the business and developed skills that are invaluable.
In 2021 I left my part time job at a flower shop to take on music as my full time job. I’m continuing to manage the band as we move forward, but have also been taking on projects producing and writing for other people.
In the summer of 2022 I started a new solo project called BEST DAD, and have been releasing new music. I’m super excited to share the collaborations that I’ve been working on in 2023.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I never wanted to be a creative, at least not professionally. I spent my childhood seeing my parents struggle financially, and knew my life would be simpler if I could just find a good job, buy a nice house and eventually retire with enough cash to fake happiness. But it wasn’t until I faced my fears and started my creative journey that I realized what it’s all about. Life is a creative process. We are the clay, constantly being spun around and shifted by the hands of experience. I’m still learning so much about myself every day, but I’m beginning to see that the goal of the creative process is the process itself. The purpose of life is living. It’s up to us to make the most of the time, ideas, resources and opportunities that we have, and share that with others. That’s what’s really driving my creative journey right now.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding and most important part of pursuing an artistic calling is your creative community. I feel so lucky to be apart of such an amazing network of talented and motivated artists and I’m so excited to see how that community grows and changes throughout my life. It’s so important to reach out and invest yourself in your community. A rising tide lifts all boats and when you’re working with the right people, amazing things can happen. Don’t be afraid to reach out and get involved. Be friendly! Share your knowledge and experience, and always learn as much as you can from people who are willing to share with you. You can always reach me through my socials too.
