We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Burton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

David, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?

My hero is my dad. He raised eight children while working a full-time union job for over 30 years. Life was never easy for him—despite his steady work, we lived in poverty, struggling just to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. I remember watching how hard he worked, day in and day out, even when he was sick, even after going on disability. He never gave up.

He faced heartbreak too—after 13 years of marriage, his wife walked out on him, and yet he stayed strong, continuing to raise us, even adopting two children who weren’t biologically his. That kind of selflessness, endurance, and quiet strength left a permanent mark on me.

Growing up in poverty deeply influenced how I view the world. It made me want more—not just in a material sense, but in terms of purpose and stability. As a kid, I always believed I was meant to rise above my circumstances. I’ve stumbled many times along the way, but I’ve never failed—because my dad never showed me what giving up looked like. He taught me the difference between falling and failing. His strength gave me the blueprint to keep going, no matter what.

His example gave me drive, a work ethic, and a deep faith that something greater would come from all the struggle. I wouldn’t be who I am without him.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

My name is David Burton, and I’m the owner of Quality Garage Door Services of NOCO. I got into the garage door industry in 2012 after leaving the military. At the time, I was struggling to find work—I was stocking dog food overnight at Petco and knew I was meant for something more. One day, while I was asleep after a shift, a garage door company came to work on the house. That unexpected visit turned into a job offer, and I ended up working for that company for several years. It was my first step into a trade that would eventually become my career and passion.

After a stint in the oil field to earn more money, the slowdown in that industry brought me back to garage doors. I had learned a lot by then, both about the trade and about myself. I had made some mistakes after leaving the military and ended up with a felony. When I asked my employer—someone I thought of like family—for a raise, he told me I wasn’t worth more because of my record and that if I wanted more, I should look somewhere else.

That moment lit a fire in me. I didn’t let it break me—it motivated me to build something of my own. I knew I could offer people better service, more respect, and real value. I started my own company with a clear mission: to raise the standard in the garage door industry and to prove that your past doesn’t define your future.

We specialize in garage door installation, repairs, and maintenance—everything from broken springs and off-track doors to full replacements and custom builds. Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

One of the most defining chapters of my life—one that truly tested my resilience—came after I left the military. Like many veterans, I struggled to adjust. I made mistakes in judgment and fell into addiction. That path ultimately led me to prison, a place that can either break you or wake you up. For me, it was a wake-up call.

I was losing time with my daughter, and that realization cut deeper than anything. I knew I couldn’t keep going down the road I was on. While I was incarcerated, I chose to do the work: I got sober, reconnected with my faith, took parenting classes, and spent time reflecting on who I wanted to be—not just for myself, but for my child and for the future I still believed I could build.

People often say that once you’re stuck in addiction or labeled by a record, there’s no coming back. But I knew that wasn’t going to be my story. I put my head down, stayed focused, and committed to change.

When I got out—right as the world was shutting down during COVID—I didn’t wait around for a second chance. I created Quality Garage Door Services of NOCO from scratch. Starting a business in the middle of a pandemic wasn’t easy, but I had clarity, purpose, and grit. I wasn’t just building a company—I was building a new life.

That chapter of my life taught me that resilience isn’t about never falling; it’s about getting back up and moving forward with intention. I didn’t let my past define me—I used it as fuel to become something more.

Have you ever had to pivot?

One of the biggest pivots in my life came after my father passed away. His death hit me hard. I fell into a dark place—I lost focus, lost motivation, and honestly, I lost myself for a while. My priorities got out of line, and I wasn’t showing up for my business or my life the way I needed to. It was like I was just drifting through each day, stuck in a mental and emotional fog.

Grief has a way of shaking your entire foundation, and it did just that for me. But over time, I started turning back to my faith. I leaned more into my relationship with God and began surrounding myself with people who genuinely wanted to see me succeed—not just in business, but as a man, a father, and a human being.

What pulled me out wasn’t some overnight breakthrough—it was a slow process of rebuilding. I realized the people in my life weren’t there to carry me, but to lift me when I needed it, and remind me of the bigger picture. That my time here is limited, and that I have a responsibility—not just to myself, but to my children—to make it count.

That moment in my life forced me to realign, recommit, and step back into my purpose. I found strength in the struggle, and I came back more focused and more driven than ever. Losing my dad reminded me just how fragile life is, and how important it is to keep moving forward—not just for the legacy we leave, but for the lives we’re shaping every day.
