We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Bonds a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
David, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I started creating as far as writing in 2013-2014 and officially started recording in 2015. I wasn’t really sure if being an artist was really i wanted to do though so it was something i kept to myself for a while. I was working full time, and heavily invest into a corporate career at this time. With that it was hard to hard to make music a full time thing because my job was demanding. Its hard to say what it would’ve looked like now if i started earlier being theres no handbook for how to make it in music besides being consistent and constantly putting out content. I guess I wish I would’ve started earlier or at least been more consistent earlier on because like any other craft it takes time to perfect and make your own. However In my eyes its a marathon not a race and important to run it at your pace. Some people blow in a year and other it takes 10. I believe in divine timing though so I feel like i’m right where i need to be in my journey as a creative.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Im a 25 year old songwriter and artist from Denver, CO. Music has always been something i’ve been passionate about. I was raised in a family of musicians. My Grandma was a singer, uncle producer, moms etc.. so for me i felt like it was just something always apart of my life. What really submerged me into the craft though was my my uncle Asain and my best friend Jakob Campbell. Really loving the craft and doing it for self is what kept me disciplined down the long run. I recorded my first song ever with my uncle in his closet and Jake was the guy that took me to an actual studio for the first time and from there it was all gas and no brakes haha.
What sets me apart from others is my willingness to step out the box and try something new. Looking at it and going head on, instead of the “thats not my lane, or this ain’t my type of vibe”. Being willing and ready to hop on anything..not staying bounded to one sound and really pushing the boundaries of the different genres and creativity to create something universal. Bringing back those feel good vibes, originality and that timelessness again.. something nostalgic yet refreshing.
Im proud of the progress made as I feel i’ve made these strides in my latest release “For The Hopeless Romantics”, available now on all streaming platforms. I hope its makes you kids want to dance and fall in love! What I’m most proud of is being able to be myself in this space.. music is freedom as sometimes I feel its the only thing that truly understands how I feel. The goal has always been to inspire and translate this same feeling into the listeners and regardless of the topic i may be talking about, they leave with something that resonated with them every time they hear a song by me.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Bringing thoughts and feelings to life. It all starts with a thought. That thought goes through a process. The process is hearing the melody, hearing the lyrics, writing it out, recording it, getting it mixed, getting it mastered and hearing your final product and falling in love with the final results! And then you put it out and gauge people reactions to your thoughts and emotions. It takes a lot to be that vulnerable sometimes but something about it is soul satisfying. Also ultimately creating something that may be apart of other’s lives as well.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to be able to inspire other’s and live off my craft and taking care of myself by simply doing what I love. I genuinely just love creating and trying to be the best artist I can be to me. With each project I make. If I stay on my path, in time I’m sure I’ll reach the goal but i’m learning to love the process of getting there. Not just wanting to get there. Its a marathon not a race.
