We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Biscevic a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, David thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on has to be my screenplay, MONTANA QUAGMIRE, which got me a lot of attention right after graduating from the Academy of Art in San Francisco in 2016. I had written four feature screenplays prior to writing “MQ” but I had decided to take on an entirely new approach. Up until then, I had written all my screenplays in a very textbook manner, (I was in school to learn the craft—what do you expect?) but with “MQ” I had decided to write the script as if I was telling MYSELF the story as opposed to trying to convince some agent or studio executive that I knew how to write—by doing that I found “my voice”! I submitted “MQ” to The Black List where it received an 8 out of 10 rating right off the bat and proceeded to receive high praise from every industry professional that read it. So I decided to hit the festival circuit where I won third place in the 2016 Slamdance Screenplay Competition which made me a member of the Writers Guild of America – West. Montana Quagmire was also a semifinalist in The Academy Nicholl Fellowship and became a highly sought after script that ultimately landed me management (albeit short-lived). Montana Quagmire has continued to rack up accolades and is currently on THE RED LIST on Coverfly.com

David, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those who don’t know me- I’m David A. Biscevic: a Bay Area native, cinephile, an award winning screenwriter and a proud member of the Writers Guild of America-West (and father to one Olivia Biscevic).
As an emerging voice in contemporary fiction, I’m passionate about crafting stories that resonate deeply with audiences, weaving complex characters and thought-provoking themes into narratives that linger long after the final page.
I knew early on that I was going to be a writer (I had been writing stories before I even went to school and my Mom still has all the proof) but more specifically, I knew I wanted to write movies. I was always obsessed with cinema and the concept of bringing a story to life and seeing it play out on the screen. The summer going into middle school, I spent my days pacing back and forth in my backyard, jotting down plot ideas, creating spreadsheets of longlines, ratings and release dates (and some pretty cool movie posters). I still have all the those longlines (plus a few more) and have dedicated countless hours to honing my craft. With writing, every part of the process is something to celebrate, from the inception of the idea, to the first line, to the final scene—there are so many small victories that keep you going. Whether I’m writing for the page or the screen, I draw from personal experiences and tap into a creative stream of consciousness rooted in my deep appreciation for literature and films that challenge the status quo. I’m excited to collaborate with anyone that shares my vision for creating impactful and enduring stories that connect with audiences worldwide, both on the page and on the screen.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to share a piece of my heart, mind and soul and to experience the feeling of releasing entire universes that are begging to escape the confines of my Encephalon.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
As a currently unrepresented writer, I’m constantly sending out queries to producers, directors, agents and managers as well as entering into prestigious screenplay competitions just to keep my scripts floating around the industry like a lure (or chum). Also— NEVER STOP WRITING!
