We were lucky to catch up with David Bedell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was born into a musical family. I lived with both my mom and uncle. When I was a little boy, I would grab my mom’s wooden spoons and beat on her pots and pans. I could do that all day, no need for a babysitter! lol One Christmas I got the best gift any kid could get, my own drumsticks with my name on them!! I didn’t know at that time I was named after my great uncle David, who was a professional jazz drummer. In addition, that same Christmas I received my first Orange Sparkle Snare Drum. Then I was exposed to my great uncle’s drum shop. From that point, it was game over I knew drums were my calling.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is David Bedell, I’m a professional drummer. I come from a family legacy that’s been revolved around music, entertainment and performing. It’s a passion I’ve been blessed with can’t live without. After years of lessons and practicing my craft, I’m honored to do this as a living. As a drummer, I love to teach, and give back to those less fortunate. I really enjoy watching my students learn something new that they didn’t know walking through my doors. I love their reactions when they watch me online. It’s priceless. I have the ability to tap into my client’s needs, and pullout their hidden capabilities. I’ve mastered the discipline of patience; to really help them through the tough times/ or hard spots. I think what sets me apart from others is my smile, I’m always reinventing myself. and constantly trying to better my approach. I most proud of my ongoing perseverance!! I’ll do what I can to make this lifestyle work. If you get to know either professionally or personally, chances are we’ll be friends for life. You’ll pick up that energy that I genuinely love what I do.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was living in Arizona several years ago playing in bands, I had heard that Paula Abdul was looking for a drummer. I had made a VHS tape of myself and asked my Uncle Larry, who was on the verge of getting a record deal with his band, if he had any pull. Long story short, I moved from Arizona and was down to my last few dollars in a matter of months. I joined a temp agency. The same Friday afternoon I got hired to unload doors off a semi-truck; which started on the following Monday. Just as soon as I hung up the phone, I got another call, thinking it was the agency again, I answered abruptly, to my surprise it was a call for an audition to be the drummer in my Uncle Larry’s band. I drove to Arkansas on that Sunday, met everyone and got called on stage. From that point, I started to play not ever hearing the song. Needless to say, I got the gig! I guess I missed my opportunity loading those doors!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I remember around the age of 15, I was riding my bicycle into town and this guy stopped me in my tracks. He was holding my handlebars trying to push drugs on me. I screamed for him to get away, he ran off. I got off my bike and said a prayer right there. I remember I said, “God it’s me, I promise you I’ll never do drugs if you put me on a world tour by the time I’m 21, ok?” Amen. Well…I was 22 when it happened so I have to keep my word. My word of advice. be careful what you wish for it just might come true!
