Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Armstrong. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I had been helping a friend start a business from the ground up and got bit by the homebrewing bug. With an increasing interest in craft beer, my friend had suggested I open a shop. So I began to develop a plan to open a Craft Beer store, which then developed into a Wine/Beer/Cigar Shop. At the time (2008) there was not a boutique bottle shop in High Point and only a few in the Triad area, so I thought I could meet this need! We opened in 2009 and expanded our space and products, adding wine in 2010. Fast forward to 2014 after another expansion in our shopping center, Wine became a big focus for us. With a unique selection of products our shop filled a niche in our community of bringing in smaller production beer and wine to an ever growing customer base.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have been in the food/beverage industry since high school and have always enjoyed serving people. I recieved my Certified Specialist of Wine and French Wine Scholar certifications from the Society of Wine Educators and Wine Scholar Guild. My particular interest in French Wine has really set us apart from alot of other retailers by offering a large selection of those wines. I am lucky to have a great group of people as coworkers who strived to provide the best service and find the perfect products for each individual customer.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think one of the biggest things for startup businesses would be to always be willing to share your time and expertise with anyone regardless if the payout at the time is big. A willingness to be a part of the community and events, even the small ones, has built our reputation and name. The face to face time speaks volumes over print and digital marketing.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth has always been our greatest source of new customers. If you take care of the folks in front of you, they will spread the word.
