We recently connected with David Anthony Baez and have shared our conversation below.
David Anthony, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Embarking on my journey as an upcoming film director and editor has been a challenging yet rewarding experience, especially in terms of earning a full-time living from my creative work. I initially started by shooting music videos for friends, laying the foundation for my career. Although these projects were unpaid, they served as a valuable stepping stone, leading to paid opportunities to shoot and edit videos for various artists across New York. However, the financial struggle was real, and the income from these early gigs was insufficient to sustain my passion. Determined to hone my craft, I juggled multiple part-time jobs, from working at Target and Uniqlo to a local bakery. The commitment to my filmmaking aspirations was unwavering, and whenever a job interfered with my primary goal, I would make the tough decision to resign and seek another opportunity that allowed me to continue pursuing my creative calling. The turning point came when I connected with the creative agency Strange Nature. This collaboration opened doors for me to work creatively on a full-time basis, a dream come true for any aspiring filmmaker. The ability to dedicate myself entirely to my passion, thanks to Strange Nature, is a true blessing and a testament to the perseverance and dedication that define my journey in the film industry.
David Anthony, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a dedicated working Director and Editor, passionate about the perpetual learning and refinement of my craft in the realm of filmmaking. My journey commenced in high school at the Academy for Careers in TV and Film, and it continued to evolve after my graduation in 2017 when I concurrently delved into shooting my own videos while pursuing education at Brooklyn College. Over the years, my portfolio has expanded through diverse projects, encompassing tours, music videos, and various content creation endeavors. This hands-on experience has been instrumental in shaping my skills as both a director and editor. A pivotal juncture in my career transpired when I joined Strange Nature, a creative agency that has afforded me the privilege of collaborating with some of the most talented individuals in the music industry. Beyond that, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to projects for some of the largest companies globally, engaging in music video and commercial work. This dynamic and diverse professional landscape continues to fuel my passion for filmmaking, driving me to push creative boundaries and elevate my craft to new heights.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
To foster a thriving creative ecosystem, it’s essential for society to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions of artists and creatives. One key aspect is the establishment of accessible funding programs to alleviate financial pressures and empower emerging talents. Emphasizing diversity and inclusivity within the arts, alongside creating spaces for collaboration and networking, is crucial for generating a dynamic and supportive environment. Beyond this, actively supporting local art initiatives, exhibitions, and creative businesses can further enhance the sustainability of artists and contribute to the overall cultural richness of communities. In summary, a comprehensive approach that encompasses financial support, diversity promotion, and community engagement is vital for the growth and flourishing of the creative landscape.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative, from my perspective, lies in the profound ability to connect with people through my work and evoke emotional responses. There’s a unique joy in crafting narratives, visuals, or experiences that resonate with individuals on a personal level. Whether it’s through a film, a music video, or any creative endeavor, the opportunity to elicit emotions and create a shared understanding with the audience is immensely fulfilling. It’s this power to forge connections and stir emotions that fuels my passion and makes the creative journey exceptionally gratifying.
