Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David & Angela Blacker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David & Angela, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
AirGigs.com was born out of the intersection of our experiences running a recording studio in New York City and the evolving landscape of the music industry catalyzed by the internet. As independent musicians and studio owners ourselves, we witnessed firsthand the increasing potential for remote collaboration and the expanding role of technology in music production.
The catalyst for AirGigs emerged during a recording project in Los Angeles when we had a last minute need for a Hammond organ player. Faced with limited options, we realized the need for an online platform connecting professional musicians, vocalists, and audio engineers with producers and songwriters globally.
In 2012, AirGigs.com became the first marketplace for hiring studio professionals, with a dual mission: to create new opportunities for remote collaboration and to empower music creators to access top-tier recording talent anywhere there’s an internet connection.
In its early days, AirGigs attracted a community of eager early adopters from music hubs like NYC, Nashville, LA, and Austin, including renowned studio musicians and engineers who collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry. Their participation solidified AirGigs as the premier destination for remote music collaboration.
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, AirGigs experienced exponential growth as the live music industry ground to a halt, drawing attention from a broader audience seeking remote collaboration solutions. Our team worked tirelessly to meet the surge in demand, clocking 15-17 hour days to support the influx of new members.
What began as an experiment among friends and colleagues has evolved into a thriving global music community, facilitating the creation of countless songs and fostering lasting connections between collaborators worldwide. We are deeply grateful to contribute to such a meaningful pursuit, enabling music creators to realize their visions and empowering music professionals to expand their revenue possibilities.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
David and Angela, co-founders of AirGigs.com, are passionate about music and technology.
Their journey began in New York City, where they juggled life as both working musicians and studio owners, and saw the potential of remote collaboration in the digital age. They created AirGigs to connect musicians, vocalists, and producers worldwide, solving the problem of geographical limitations in the music industry.
Their platform offers professional services and tools for remote music production, attracting top-tier studio talent from around the globe. A good number of members on the platform are Grammy winners/nominees with credits from world renowned artists under their belts.
David and Angela are most proud of the team behind AirGigs, and the vibrant community that has grown around the site. They want potential creators to know that AirGigs is a unique hub for innovation and artistic expression. Whether you’re a seasoned music professional or a budding artist, AirGigs provides the resources to bring your musical vision to life.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
In our early days, we were all about constant hustle and drive to get it done. But as we grew, we hit a wall: constant drive led to burnout. We had to learn to slow down to speed up. We scaled back and prioritized things like personal time and meditation. We realized that we were running a marathon and not a sprint, and had to adapt our energies and focus accordingly. It didn’t just save our sanity, it helped take the business to a new level. We learned that thriving is impossible without taking time to recharge.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
As musicians and studio owners, we created the service we always wished existed. Being part of the recording community ourselves, we approached our work with an understanding of the challenges and needs of the community. This approach resonated well. It led to organic word-of-mouth growth as people recognized the genuine efforts we were making to solve the problems facing working musicians and engineers. This sincere connection helped foster a strong community around our service, reinforcing our reputation in a natural way.
