We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Davey Cook a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Davey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Every project I do is meaningful, as most of my clients are celebrating a big event and I get to make them feel their absolute best on their special day. However, one project/s sticks out in particularly. I have had the honor of working side by side with Riley Couture from The Morning Show on Hot 99.5 throughout all of her special moments – red carpets, her baby shower, engagement photos, wedding day, etc. I have seen her growth through every part of her life, and her mine. She has supported me consistently and really is my muse. I created a lip line, and collabed with her for one shade plus have done multiple podcasts together. Our friendship has grown larger than just artist/client. It’s been very meaningful to work with someone through all chapters of their life and get to be a part of it all.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My love for makeup started at a very young age with having 4 sisters growing up. I use to watch my older sisters and my mother do their makeup and hair, so I started helping my younger sisters and friends with learning how to do their makeup and hair. My passion for it has continued to grow as getting older, so I started my own business in 2015. My company name is True Colors Beauty Co, which consists of makeup and hair services. I went from just a team of myself, to now a team of 5 amazing ladies that have the same passion as I do when it comes to beauty. We provide makeup and hair services for any event in someones life especially weddings, or if they just want to have their makeup and hair done one day. I also provide makeup lessons, and have a lip line of my own that sells lip kits and glosses. It is absolutely a blessing to be able to create a fun, loving, environment for these clients and provide them the best possible services around. I believe everyone should feel beautiful in their own skin, but I strive to exceed their beauty with new techniques I learn along the way. Everyones style, face shape, skin, etc is so different but I am proud to be able to help women from all areas enhance their features and show them how beautiful they really are. Getting to be part of someones special day, is full of love, laughter, and beauty, and thats why I love what I do.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media has been a rollar coaster for me and my business. It is very hard getting your name out there outside of friends and family. Word of mouth is huge when it comes to this, but also growing your social media accounts will help. It has taken me some time to grow my Instagram, and I still have a long way to go to be where I want to be, but it starts with engagement. You have to be present on it with your followers and continue to post constantly. It can get discourgaing when you put so much time into it and things don’t get as many likes, or views, but I’ve learned to not give up. It’s not about the number as much as it is about the appreciation and support. Photos, reels, stories, all are ways to build your audience and LOTS of them! My biggest advice to give for someone trying to build their social media – just be authenic and 100% yourself! I’ve struggled with my own identity in many ways, but I have come to realize that I love myself the way I am, and I want people to see that side of me, plus my business side. Others are attracted to realness, so always stay true to yourself.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To be honest, my ultimate goal is to be a celebrity makeup artist. I aspire to be like Mario (Kim K’s makeup artist). I am driven by the hustle and beauty that he creates. I would love to grow my brand to become something known world-wide. I have started with a lip line, but my goal is to eventually create brow kits, eyeshadow pallets, everything makeup related. Not only do I want to create valuable products, I want to bring glam and inspire beauty to others. Makeup techniques are forever changing, there is always something new to learn, so growth is always necessary when being creative. I love doing weddings and special events which started off my journey but there is so much more out there to tackle, and my goal is to reach it. Anything is possible when you put your mind to it, right?
