We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dave Woods II a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dave, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
My first major hurdle was learning how to master the craft of being a good content creator. I needed to learn the technical skills to be a good photographer, videographer, video editor, & motion graphics designer.
Leaving the comfort of a stable job to venture into the world of entrepreneurship was no easy decision, but building a business allowed me to provide tailored content solutions for my clients in my own way. Constantly developing my skills means I’m always facing a bunch of different challenges. It’s like an ongoing adventure, but it’s what keeps things interesting.
I believe in prioritizing attention to detail in the projects we undertake. Our approach revolves around understanding our clients’ unique objectives, enabling us to create content that not only looks great but also drives tangible results for their businesses.
Technology has made video production incredibly accessible to the general public, but I see it as an opportunity to excel in my craft and deliver results to my clients.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I gained an education with a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics Design. I went on to work for a few creative agencies for 10 years where I learned how to create advertising content for local, regional, and national organizations. In December 2019, I left my full time position to begin my own content production company “Woodshop Media”.
The driving force behind establishing my own operation stemmed from a desire to prioritize the creation of high-quality content that consistently delivered impactful results, rather than following a quantity-driven approach.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Youtube. It offers an overwhelming wealth of information that allows individuals to learn and explore almost any subject. Having access to online platforms earlier in my journey would have accelerated my growth as a creative professional.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building an audience on social media has been primarily driven by showcasing the quality of my work. I firmly believe that your work should speak for itself.
My advice would be to focus on creating content that reflects your unique creative vision. Collaborations and partnerships will expand your reach and tap into relevant communities. Be patient and persistent, as building a meaningful audience takes time and a genuine connection with your followers.
