We were lucky to catch up with Dave Koch recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dave thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
This was a big thing to overcome for me. Photography for the longest time was something I did for fun. Work was SUPPOSED to be a chore. One day, and with the help from my wife, I found a way to combine my love of making images and business. It has worked out very well!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
A lot of people think photography is just pressing a button. Its so much more… setting up the scene, lighting, staging not to mention post production. I would say photography is 5% taking the actual image, and 95% problem solving. Thats what I really do- fix things to make a better image.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Just find a way to do it your way and follow your creative inspirations. Dont worry about what other people do or how they do it. Do it your way so you stand for something. If you try and fit into someone elses mold, you will never be happy.
Its hard, but turn down jobs that are not you rather than forcing yourself into that mold.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I would have to say that was when I went from trying to be all things to all people to realizing I could turn down jobs and I did not have to do things that are not me. Its important to work with people on the same page as you.
